I think the 1st upgrade should be your alternator and then Of course the wiring at that same time And if your battery is not strong enough to power You're vehicle Then it's best to upgrade your battery Or am I wrong?

does a car audio system sound better or louder with the engine on or off? I mean don't you have more voltage with the car on because of the alternator. or does the system sound the same with a 12V battery only?

Alternator and battery are first couple of things and I like to get two new batteries actually so one doesn't want to pull from the other if I'm not using a battery osolator

Big 3/4, then alternator, and then batteries/ultra caps.
Battery before alternator is a bandaid fix for having an alternator that can't handle the system as is.

I'm kinda new to the way systems are installed today as compared to 30 plus years ago. I can install just about any system but my question revolves around doing the big 3 to a 2012 Chevrolet Traverse. The main battery sits in the floor board of the back right passenger compartment.

I have Alpine 6.5 componets front & 6.5 in the rear. Running a 12inch Sundown U12 with an sundown 1500watt amp. My local shop told me don't need a big 3 upgrade nor alternator. Just get an amg battery. But was taking on upgrading in the future. Think I may have to just get things done my own since these shops don't want my money. Smh

Had to ask someone that knows. 2018 Chevy cargo van with a 1000 watt JL audio system, Ran 0 gauge hot and 0 gauge ground to chassis. When its hitting hard, slight headlight dimming, voltage drops just below 14. Not to bad, but I'm about to replace the factory ac delco battery, Which type would be recommended? Deep cycle, AGM or conventional with more CCA?

My grandpa used to always tell us the first thing you should do when you buy a vehicle is upgrade to literally the best battery you can get to fit in it and get the best lifetime warranty so if we are ever straightened it's not the battery. So from an audio standpoint the alternator, and again best one that will fit with the lifetime warranty.

Mark do you always run a full size 0 gauge wire from the amp board all the way back to the battery or do you just provide a good ground close to the amp board or is it both?

for hard bass pulse a Cap is nice because it is the fastes, but then the alternator must charge the cap and must provide the bass. if you run the system hard a cap will help your car

I'm curious whether it is better to add a second dedicated alternator for car audio (130amp stock alt)
Or to replace the stock alternator for a 250 amp HO alt

In my case I have a 2012 chevy cruze 1.4 turbo
My alternator is stupid hard to get to but I think there's plenty room for a second one.
Second alt is 200$
While a HO alt for this car is 600$ish

I would much rather add a 2nd deep cycle battery. Optimas were the best back in the day🤣

Hey, i have a concern.. im going to be running an amp that will do around 1400rms and 2500 or so max at 1ohm.. the amps fused for 120amps, my concern is the speaker wire between the amp and speakers, im going to run 4 (8ohm) subs.. im worried that 14 or 16ga wont be enough, any info would be greatly appriciated..

The first thing I would do is to replace the battery if it isn't in good condition - it's no good to do any upgrades if you can't start the car. Assuming that the alternator is serviceable, the next thing to do is upgrade the alternator wiring - red sheathed (positive) wire directly to the battery positive terminal via an appropriately sized fuse and adding a ground (black sheathed) from the alternator body to the negative battery terminal. I went with #2 AWG since I believe that would be more than adequate for me. The "Big 4" upgrades say to upgrade the engine block ground but I don't see how that is helpful if you add a large ground wire (per the Big 4 upgrade tutorials) from the alternator body to the battery since the alternator is mounted to the engine with metallic supports - seems redundant to me. The alternator should be upgraded depending on the electrical load.

Big 3 first, especially if you plan on re-locating the battery or adding batteries/ultracaps! Great cables/wiring adds efficiency and helps you “find” additional power that you didn’t know you had.
