👍Very informative, a huge thank you 👍 for this comparison using M3-max (top tier 16/40)! It follows the same pattern you identified for the M2-max (top-tier) 14" & 16" models. If you happen to have access to this laptop... I'd be very interested to see an addendum to add the **14" M3-max (lower-tier 14/30)** to the comparison to see if the lower CPU/GPU count would fit more neatly into the smaller thermal envelope and resolve the thermal 'bottleneck', as there is also a considerable cost difference between the 14" M3-max (14/30) and 16" M3-max (16/40). If the lower tier M3-max 14" 'fits' more neatly into it's smaller thermal envelope to enable it to fully utilise its CPU & GPU cores; then don't you think it would offer a very good value option for those who want portability (pehaps also use an external screen), don't need quite as much processing power but still need a computer for intensive tasks. 0.5kg difference in physical weight aside, the thing that I find heavier is the idea of carrying the larger 16" fully specified laptop about worth more than £4K in my bicycle pannier between meetings! 😧 Your review of the 16" M3-max (14/30) was really helpful in that respect.

The 16 inch machine should also have a longer operational lifespan too, because li-ion batteries hate excessive heat and they hate deep-discharges. The bigger machine's better heat rejection should preserve your battery capacity for longer, and the bigger capacity to start with should mean less need to deep-discharge/recharge the battery pack, also contributing to a longer lifespan.

@MaxTechOfficial Hi there.... I love the wallpapers you are using. Where can I download these for my beloved MacBookj M2 Pro 16"...... I wonder if there would be any goodies for me as a off-line designer in Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign and often (lite) work in Photoshop to switch from the M2 Pro 16" to the M3 Pro 16"? And do you think the M4 will be arround summer/authum 2024? or even M5 spring 2025?

You actually switched the 14 in and 16 in when displaying the thermal test results. It showed that the 14 in was cooler compared to the 16 in but in reality, it was the complete opposite!

The FCPX playback test of the 8K footage was worth the price of admission alone to this vid. I've been asking other YT's to show this. That 8K Canon footage is one of the toughest codecs out there for machines. Imagine spending as much as the 14" M3 MacBook Max costs and seeing that stuttering on playback! Totally unacceptable. I would've liked to have known whether it was playing back at "Better Quality" and what the frame rate was as well.

I’d like to see a thermal/fan/noise test between a 16” M3 Max 14cpu/30GPU vs a 16” M3 Max 16cpu/40gpu. I’m hoping the 16” 14/30 runs quiet for complex audio production projects with Logic Pro. I’m looking for the fastest quiet MBP (with the least amount of GPU overkill 😊). A friend says he’s never heard the fan on his M1 Max used for audio production. I’m hoping the 16” 14/30 M3 Max can do the same, but with even more power. Thanks for your videos!

You forgot the most important thing when making a decision.. the price. The price difference between the base model 14 and 16 inch M3 here in Australia is $1600! Which is just crazy!

Uhh I can think of 300 good reasons to buy the 14" over the 16"... no mention of the massive price difference? There's an 11% price difference between the two, for anyone who cares. Depending on the workload, you might actually get better 'bang for your buck' from the 14".

Your M1 MAX Logic Pro benchmark score is incorrect, M1 MAX gets 190 tracks easily, you must have been running it in Rosetta.

Battery Life, you say at the end that the battery on the 16 inch has 42% left and the 14 inch only has 22% left after the same tests on both macbooks but the battery on the 14 inch is 37% smaller, surely you need to calculate this properly guys based on power in Watts used NOT percentage surely as I believe the same amount of watts are used with 1 watt, with the 14 inch using 1 less watt? JUST A THOUGHT

I don’t know if there are any mistakes you made. I tested on my 14 m3 max unit. Cinebench 2024 is around at 1580, event hits at 1605. And 71 seconds Xcode compilation. Merely no noticeable performance between 16inch, but at cost of noise and battery life

There has to be some kind of lightweight portable laptop risers that can help reduce heat when you’re out in the field? Surely even placing some lego blocks wrapped in silicone (or blu-tac!) underneath would lift it and keep it from sliding. If you really want the 14” but occasionally need the 16” performance, just lifting the laptop and finding a desk fan or even a USB powered Noctua fan could work? 😅

Oh no! I'm a dev and just got notification my 14" M3 max with 128GB RAM 8TB storage shipped. I should return it immediately, right?

Kidding.. benchmarks not particularly real world for me. Went with the M3 max for extra memory, and 14" for portability. I have a 16" M2 Pro for work and it's great but a bit unwieldy for me unless it's on a stand plugged into an external monitor.

I'll be coding, bunch of IDEs, running containers and VMs for dev and pen testing. Extra RAM will be useful and hoping the M3 max will be good for short bursts without throttling. Can't see myself really pegging the CPU a whole lot.
