What would be counted as an "air drop"? Pretty much every ethereum based wallet has shitcoins that get attributed to them at random times, usually without the wallet owner's knowledge because of how the ledger system works. Based on what Andrew is saying here is that if those shitcoins were worth 10k when they were attributed to a wallet that would be a taxable event, and that would mean that the wallet owner's income is bumped by 10k even if that shitcoin/scam/whatever tanks to worthless the next day.

Because inflation devalues your savings, it compels everyone to be an investor. It's called don't worry about it and just pay whatever taxes are owed when you cash out. If the IRS bills you pay it. Otherwise don't worry about it.

In my opinion avoiding taxes refers to a criminal activite. Planning your taxes is not criminal. Instead of avoiding, plan your taxes so you will be paying minimum legal amount of taxes.

Question: if I invest 10k into a coin and the coins value goes up to 50k but I only sell and pull out my initial 10k, but 40k is still sitting there unsold. Do I owe tax on that 10k or the the entire 50k gains?
