Overly expensive maintenance costs, or replacement batteries and overly long repair times are the biggest hurdles in my mind to getting a Tesla. It seems you simply cannot trust them more than a few years old unless you have free cash in excess just in case anything happens.

Knowing how bad most people treat rental cars putting your personal car on Turo is just asking for trouble.

Why on earth would you rent a Tesla on Turo? That isn’t a rhetorical question either. You KNOW people are going to beat the piss out of it. Most have never driven a Tesla and can’t wait to “see what it’s got”. Considering the amount of Teslas you’ve owned, … and that you spring $2500 for an aftermarket suspension pa mage… I am guessing it isn’t a money issue, so why would you subject your car to that abuse? … and after all this… you continue to rent on Turo. Absolutely crazy. Makes no sense at all.

The axle could have easily come out when the aftermarket parts had been installed as I've done this myself. Not sure why you would think Tesla should cover something like this under warranty.

I would think a lot of value was lost once the Tesla Model Y was in an accident. Now add a 2nd accident. Doesn’t matter it was fixed, it was in an accident. One thing I learned from this video - never lease out your car and a one owner car means nothing now.

At least you got some business loss deductions in the process. I was wondering if there is a passive inertia monitor that could be installed to detect abusive driving. Seems like something Tesla would log as well.

Lesson here - test drive the car you want to buy (so you don’t have to complain about suspension) and if you have the thought of “hey, I’ll rent my car out to make extra money”, then maybe it’s not the right thing to buy to begin with 🤷‍♂️

not being able to align the car could be due to the new parts limitations and how it changes the suspension...

$6000 repair is no big deal. I was laid off one time and my car's transmission broke, always drove it like a grandpa but still it broke. In today's money that equals around $9000. So you see, $6000 is quite cheap. I paid more for a GM rebuilt transmission figuring it's good. a few years later, that broke also. Instead of fixing it, I just got the car crushed and bought a Lexus IS-F the next day. That car, not a single thing went wrong and handled extremely better too. I just learned what brand to never buy, along with working in a garage. Anything from GM, Chrysler, Ford (at least to all the mechanics I know) are absolute junk. Personal experience too. Since I drove Lexus, last 17 years, I spent nothing on repairs. I needed a battery once, tires of course, brakes (just the pads) those are dirt cheap and I easily changed those myself. Oil Change, but not often like they want you to do. That's kind of a waist. Cheapest vehicles I ever owned and 100% works all the time. I'll get an EV when I have to, until, I personally just enjoy making lots of $ on Tesla stock & Nvidia. I understand Tesla well and they're very nice, I just don't feel rushed to jump in. They just get better and better as I wait.

You should never modify a vehicle under warranty. The manufacturer will always blame after market parts every time. You will never win a case after you modify the original specifications and design of the car. Any suspension modification can affect the alignment and travel of the half shaft. The presumably longer travel of a softer or more supple suspension could stretch or misalign the shaft in either it's input, put output side. The car could of hit a large bump or pothole that caused the wheel to travel more than designed pulling the half shaft out of the axle and causing the grinding noise and the leak. This would explain the broken parts, shredded input shaft, and oil leak

Turo as a business isn’t bad. Just don’t use your daily driver on turo. I can’t even imagine letting a random person drive my daily driver or any of my private cars. I’ve seen the amount of thrashing rentals get intentionally and most cases, unintentionally so even just the thought of it makes me cringe.

You have to remember that many people only want to rent a Tesla to prove that it is a bad car and the treatment they give it is super bad. I'm telling you this because Hertz and Uber made a deal to rent the Model 3s so that the drivers could do Uber and you can't imagine how they treat those cars.

My life is so much less complications driving 20 years old Toyota Sienna that hasn’t needed any repair over $2k - engine, transmission, cold AC, electric windows work like new at 350K miles. I traded it in for a new Toyota Sienna Hybrid that gets 40 mpg on trips that translates to 600 miles plus range with unlimited use of heater and AC without worrying about shortening the range. More importantly, smooth ride and spacious interior all comfortable long distance driving on road trips without driver fatigue.

I had a friend who had a dealer Monte Carlo with 13 miles on it while they fixed some hard to diagnose issues on his Caddy.
He drove the New Chevy 3000 miles like a bat out of hell. Engine was toast at 3K miles.
Moral of this story is the same as yours. Renters have NO investment in your property. I'm not a bit surprised you got your Y Back after some abuse inflicted by joyriding. "Drive it like you stole it!" comes to mind.
