I vividly remember, when I shortly went to Dubai 2018 for some work. During the night, on the normal main streets, you would find literally thousands of little pictures of scantily clad women advertising their "massage skills", ie thinly vailed prostitution. It wasn't the redlight district or anything, this was the normal streets you would walk during the day. Come the morning hours, vast waves of poorly paid non-native workers would scrub the streets clean and you would not find a lick of any such advertisement once the first rays of the sun hit the streets. It really is a city of many faces and masks. And once you left the busy main roads and souks, there was nothing but closed down shops, weirdly thousands of shops selling fabric (not cloths ... just rolls and rolls of fabric) and living space and cheap restos for the untold masses of the foreign workforce.
