I find Valve's take on Canonicity 'The Games are as they are', pretty damn lazy. A writer who values their work should have the courage to commit to what is true and what is not true within that story.

Just saying, 'Oh, well, ah... we'll let YOU the reader decide!' Is the flabbiest kind of postmodern nonsense. Our greatest literary works have come from writers who have a solid vision for their story. They don't wimp out by handing over legitimacy to the reader.

I appreciate Barney the most, because he's actually representative of what most of us schlubs could aspire to if we stepped up. The world is held up by 'The Blue Collar Demographic' more than any other & they do what needs to be done, with no expectation of any glory or status.

it's really amazing the amount of worldbuilding valve had with all of the half life 1 and 2 games and portal games... really sucks how episode 2 just ends the way it does without any real ending to the story, and portal 2 ends with chell just being kicked out not knowing if there are even any more humans or anything out there, the whole hl universe had so much more potential beyond what it already was but they just abandoned it all...

The default stance of canon is usually: anything officially published and not expressly said to be non-canon, nor having irreconcilable conflicts with established canon should be considered canon until otherwise declared. Of course, this is the general 'canon is what the IP holder declares it to be'/'canon from authority' argument. If you don't accept the word of the 'authority' on the matter, then the only other thing is: whatever you can rationalize is canon to you. Personally? I see nothing in Blue Shift or Opposing Force that creates a major conflict with Half Life, nor have I seen anything to suggest that Valve considers them a problem to the canon. So they're canon until Valve declares otherwise. It's not like either game is bad or brings nothing to the table/lore of the world, so why people would argue they're not is beyond me.

I really like to think that after the events of HL2:EP2, some epic battle happens and humanity wins. All of the surviving combine soldiers have returned to their normal mental state and are finally human again. Humanity united and came out on top, if not with a few deaths. There are two possible outcomes with Barney I think, the good one where he makes it out alive and is treated a hero by humanity, or where he dies but in a really sad way to make whoever playing the game cry. Afterwards people pitch in to create a giant statue for Barney. Idk that is if HL2:EP3 does release.

The Gman employed Gordon Freeman and Adrian Shepard for their survival skills in impossible situations. He made the mistake of ignoring Barney who is now a wild variable the Gman failed to take into account.

I think we need a game taking place in the seven hour war with Barney as the protagonist.

I think people underrate how ballsy you gotta be to risk the Combine's transhuman wrath being someone with as much knowledge as Barney by going undercover in the CP. All it would take is one slip up, and Barney would be a goldmine info for the Combine to extract forcefully.

Would be nice if some modding group would make a Blue Shift 2, where you get to play through Barney's side of the events of Half Life 2. Could add some new mechanics focussed around blending in while he's undercover.

Valve really needs to make a side game for Barney, showing how he managed to infiltrate civil protection.

Considering Barney was just a generic guard in HL1 and did not even have a name until Blue Shift, Valve adding Barney as a specific character in Half Life 2 indicates pretty clear to me that valve considers Blue Shift mostly canon at least.
