Here’s my take on Green Day in particular, especially after seeing them live recently and growing up with several of their albums: they happen to be the most popular punk rock band, but for me, their music and attitude does not fit that sound and aesthetic of pop punk. Their marketing however, I think does fit that to a T, but given a lot of that marketing is towards their profits going to charities around the world, I personally see it as a leverage tool to make as much punk-style change as they could while using the most effective tools they have at their disposal.

Blink 182's enema of state standardized what is considered pop punk. Listen to any other "pop punk" bands albums before enema of state and then listen to their albums after enema of state and you'll notice they now all have that American pie soundtrack sound.

I grew up in the 90s with pop punk and Ska. I feel lucky I grew up in such a happy time. I'm 40 and still listen to pop punk and Ska. But I listen to others music as well.
