While yea you could wait to catch one when you receive a fishing rod
At that point in the game when your offered the magikarp you are paying for the Pokédex entry
And if you do the switch out method
It won’t take as long as you think to get it to evelove

Honestly, getting Magikarp that early in the game isn't too bad. As long as you're willing to take the time to grind up its level, then you can get a Gyarados very early on.

Well for me it's not really scam cause if you evolved the Magikarp into Gyarados well it will guarantee you a success in many battles to come

Honestly, I don't see why everyone says The Magikarp at The Pokecenter newr Mt. Moon is a ripoff. Pokeballs cost $200 so you're really only paying $300 for the Magikarp and it gives you the possibility of having a Gyrados relatively early in the game which is very valuable if you chose Charmander or Bulbasaur. Yes Magikarp is useless until level 15 but it's not that hard to level it up considering your team won't be full that early in the game.

I always buy the Magikarp. It's a fair fee, he's only making 100 profit after using a ball, and by the time you can fish one for yourself, if you sent out the one you bought first in every encounter up until that point, you'll already have a Gyarados XD I didn't know they buffed him later on, as well!

I will not deny it Magikarp definitely is useless, but with the proper training and evolution Magikarp can actually be pretty useful especially when it evolves into Garidos.

The magi Karl salesman lets you get garados super early if you know how to grind, it’s a steal

Magikarp is not totally useless if you picked a Charmander for your starter. Take the time to train Magikarp and powerhouse your way through the first gym easy.

technically the last one isn't a scam, just give a terrible iv gyarados and in return u get a 2x31 iv future gyarados

Nah i knew he's like that but it got me earlier access to Gyarados so it was a 500 well spent. Plus he's useful if you want a shiny magikarp just keep reloading the save until you get one.

A gyarados that early in the game is a huge power spike and is strong enough to be part of your main team all the way though to the league.

the Mt Moon guy is really useful in nuzlocks, freeing up another body of water that would be otherwise wasted on a likely magikarp encounter.

Nuzlocking gives you an appreciation for the noble magikarp salesman. As gyarados sweeps Misty.

The kanto Magikarp is a legit deal tho. Being able to get a Magikarp and start grinding before Vermillion is worth it.

It's a great way to get a Magikarp before you're actually able to and you can out in the extra effort raising it to evolve into a Gyarados.

wtf are you talking about? The Magikarp salesman is great. You don’t even have a fishing rod at that point in the game, and the Magikarp evolves into an incredibly useful Gyarados super early. Even if you did have a rod, he saves you the time of actually going out and catching one for yourself, and the price is so low that it’s basically negligible. There’s no reason not to take that deal.

NGL that first magikarp outside Mt Moon is pretty good because you can't get the old rod until... I think Vermillion? So you could easily get it fully evolved before then!
