This was North American 120 volt 2 phase. I guess there was no GFI.

Wow, even here in the states with our "highly dangerous" plug design and "outdated" choice of 120VAC, we don't have old wiring this bad. I suppose, historically, because of rampant communism and the Islamic Ottoman Empire, Eastern Europe has been poor, so there wasn't much of a choice of materials and sources to get decent electrical systems set up. (Plus, this is a concrete house, right? We've got wooden houses so we can run wires in the wall cavities.)

P.S. We do have older wiring which we call "knob and tube" that can be dangerous. It's a wire suspended in the walls with simple ceramic standoffs ("knobs" and "tubes"). It's a clever and practical design for it's time, however if wall insulation is place too close, or dust accumulates, it can start to leak current, or overheat the wire. I have also seen DIY wiring which was bad, but yeah, that was DIY of the not-quite "handy" handyman style! (I.E. Someone who knew how to hook wires together, but not how to do it safely.)
Also, some of the very ancient fuse panels had fuses with a screw-in base ... some of them were poorly designed, in that you could stick a penny behind it and it would bypass the fuse! Heehe, don't try that at home kids...
One last thing ... we did have a run of a manufacturer in the 50's to 70's that made faulty circuit breakers. They can jam inside and fail to break the circuit. Nowadays, houses will (typically) NOT pass inspection with such a breaker panel, and electricians will usually refuse to work on it unless it is being replaced entirely.

P.S.2. That knife sharpener... what's the age and manufacturer of that motor?

P.S.3. BTW The end-on-end plugs/sockets could be okay safety wise if they are properly wired and rated for the circuit. The main thing is, with more contact points in series, you have less reliability.

Only for smart people, it can be called "smart people tester" if you arent smart you know what i mean
