Stay away from any ruins in the interior, usually mined areas have signed posts. De-mining work is currently still underway in those areas that were affected.
There has been a lot of trouble in Croatia during the 20th century. Many old houses that are ruined are due to events after 1945 when many people lost property due to the nationalisation policies of the Yugoslav communist party. In effect property ( houses, farmland etc) was stolen from private owners and handed over to the state.
