🔷Museu Marítim de Barcelona🔷
The Maritime Museum of Barcelona (in Catalan, Museu Marítim de Barcelona) is located in the building of the Royal Shipyards of Barcelona. The shipyards were a space dedicated to naval construction between the 13th and 18th centuries, whose existence has been documented since 1243.
On October 23, 1936 and by decree of the Generalitat, the Maritime Museum of Catalonia was created. Since a few years ago and by the Board of Trustees of the Instituto Náutico del Mediterráneo, the creation of a maritime museum along with a naval library had been promoted, since the Nautical School of Barcelona, founded in 1769, had a collection of models and instruments with the name of Museum or Naval Cabinet. This collection is the one that would be the base of the museum that was intended to be created and that upon the delivery of the Shipyards to the city, due to the abandonment of the military institutions that occupied it, caused the building to be assigned to said museum.
Due to the attacks and bombardments caused by the Spanish civil war in 1936, the Generalitat made the decision to evacuate the most important pieces and move them to Mas Figarola, located in the town of Seva (province of Barcelona). These war circumstances and the subsequent regime change delayed the opening of the museum to the public. It was finally inaugurated on January 18, 1941, already with the name of the Maritime Museum of Barcelona.
In 1958 he was appointed director of the José María Martínez-Hidalgo museum, doing a great job (among other things the construction of the Galera Real) until his retirement in 1983, assisting in the transfer of ownership of the Museum with the arrival of democracy. . Later, on February 1, 1993, the "Consortium of the Royal Docks and Maritime Museum of Barcelona" was established, by agreement between the City Council, the Provincial Council and the Port Authority of Barcelona.
Since 1999, the museum has been more open to the public, giving part of its spaces for the celebration of various events by entities of the city, for exhibitions and educational activities.
