Wish I'd seen this years ago when I bought my sewing machine. The basics you started with took me weeks to learn how to do. I made a bunch of camping gear which worked great - but my seams would scare bears.

Great video! It can be difficult to find in-depth tutorials, so thank you for that! I just wanted to make a note about the French seam. Along with the flat-felled swam, it is a really good option for people with sensory issues!

Your videos are really helpful! I’m very new to sewing, so it’s difficult for me to visualize how these seams will work/look on a finished piece. Some seem like they would stick up along the edges of whatever you’re making. It would be helpful to see seam examples in their final state.

Sewing is an industrial process as much as a creative one. I’m glad I grew up in the era when Moms were sewing, fabric departments in all the stores, and Home Ec class offered sewing. It took years of practice, as well as many other sewing classes at local sewing and quilt shops to be proficient, and currently been reading a book on mending methods, which is mostly what I do, repair or alter clothes for myself, for others, or for the resale of vintage clothing. It’s been an ongoing process, a lot to learn, but a little at a time, and at some point, the best results come with the best equipment, one day I will have an industrial machine!😀. I can boastfully say, “no one has ever complained about my sewing!”

I am thrilled.
Bought a new and different machine about 15 years ago - a modern Brother.
I was lost. Not a clue how it worked and then lost the instructions and then became ill.
10 years later, I am back sewing, but can’t figure out how it works.
Grew up sewing on a Singer bought in 1953 ( used ) by my Mom - who was a seamstress.
She basically was my teacher, after 2 yrs at school - Home Ec. I eventually bought a different machine, but same simplistic type. Made lots of dresses and even a lined coat. Loved sewing. But when metric came in, I had trouble adjusting and gave up on patterns.

It was fine for what I was sewing - curtains with French seams ( no zig zag - no serger ), shortening my kids jeans. Also sewed costumes for my daughter’s Dance School where I learned to sew without using a pattern.

Then I decided to sew and alter clothes to wear when I finally had time. So I bought the Brother.

I can now understand a lot just from this video. Thank you so much. I am 69 and started sewing at 12. I think I will be doing a lot more sewing properly, using the features on my machine and watching your videos on how to use them.
Plus I am not ill anymore. 😊

I never ever thought I’d leave the sport shooting range eager to get home and work my recently purchased Singer HD and Juki TL-18. I love learning new things. It’s good for your health, I believe!

Many thanks for your brilliant videos Tock, and I would also like to echo Ian Butlers comment about defying traditional gender hobbies . I am a carpenter and amateur boat builder , but I have just bought a sowing machine and three years ago I taught myself to knit socks . My socks are lovely to wear and I will knit a guernsey or Icelandic sweater at some stage . I am just starting on the sowing journey but hope to eventually do loose covers for my three piece suite. Like many people I have spent many years working in cold and uncomfortable conditions ,and still do although now semi retired .I still enjoy this work, but it is lovely to sit by the wood burner on winter evenings and practice another skill while maybe listening to an audio book . Only a few of my friends know about this ,and I have a good few male friends who I would not tell as they are distinctly chauvinistic in that way of thinking. The way I look at it is that these are additional skills and who wouldn’t want to increase their own potential ? Some folks are sadly small minded . Hope you continue to make the videos……today ,using one of yours ,I have threaded my machine and run off a few rows of what appear to be perfect stitches ! In closing I would also just like to say what amazing things sowing machines are , the working parts are just beautifully made . Whoever it was who came up with the first design was a true genius. Thanks again !!!

Actually french seems can be quite useful for a lot more than bridal wear and women's where they can be amazing and pants and for a lot of options it just depends on what you want. Sewing as art not science. It's all about trying to get the desired effect. Who knows maybe you want a giant bird's nest of thread on the back of your project or on the front of your project maybe you're trying to draw attention to that area. I think that's the great thing about being creative you use basic information To build your own world. If people didn't break the rules and try something different we probably wouldn't have chocolate chip cookies.

I have a Kenmore 158 when Hemming pants I get to a heavy seam, it goes through without problems when
a) I've lubricanted the needle first and
b) I don't slow down. I can't get through with it going slow, but at normal speeds, just stabs right through without a change in sound. Exception was a broken needle once. However, if I slow way down, it gets stuck in the heavy double seam and is hard to extract with the hand wheel.
QUESTION: Is this a good practice, or should I skip past heavy seams that will not power through at slow speed and get stuck? The model is a Kenmore 158.13150 (1978 purchase) With plastic side & bottom cover, but steel internal moving parts.

Too bad yer not into vintage sewing machines with metal gears and such. But , ya, men sometimes are better at sewing, just like some women are better with weapons. There's something nice about being the only "dude" on the sewing factory floor amongst all those machines. I took my auto mechanic skills and applied them to sewing machinery. If ya wanna do some embroidery or sew shoes and boots. I'm game. Work on heavier materials. I'm yer guy. I wanna learn to make a few shirts or jeans or do a quilt or pillow. I've done the moss and chenille. Learning seaming basics is a good thing. Honestly, we need to get back to teaching that kinda thing. Tip of the hat to ya! Tock. PS. Hat making needs to come back also.

Howdy, I'm finding your style to be engaging. I would like to make a suggestion that for clarity you use 2 different materials when doing your tutorials. I find that in the low light levels you have it is often near impossible to see the seems and distinguish what is the "right" face and which is the "wrong" face. JM2cW. Thanks

I have no idea how your straight stitches come out so straight every single time. I do my best to keep my facric on target but a lot of times I end up with stitches that aren't totally parallel. Sometimes they come out good but some just look terrible.

Excellent, excellent video. You explain things quite well, without a lot (or really any) destractions. Thank you so much for the infromation! I am going to check your channel to see if there is a serger video, I am contemplating getting a serger, but I am not sure if it is really complicated or not? I should be able to figure it out, I have been sewing in one form or another for 30 some odd years right?

Hello! I subscribed to your channel yesterday! :)
I have a noob question; which stitch should I use for making polyester bags in bulk?
I want to start up a business, but I really have no idea which would be best
Your seams kept looking better and better through the video, but also more and more time-consuming, and I plan to fabricate hundreds (and hopefully even thousands!), eventually
Also, if you don't mind, which thread would you recommend? (cotton, polyester, or nylon?) Any recommendation for a machine, for working with rather thin polyester?
Thanks much!
