The adaptors are likely coming loose due to thermal expansion and contraction. Getting over headed and expanding and then the two sections are cooling at a different rate causing one to squeeze on the other side forcing the adaptor out over time, and it would not take much to create a cascading problem.
Also, I was looking to upgrade from my 6750xt to a 7800xt or a 7900xt but if the 8000 series might be out by the end of the year I might have to just wait to see how they will compare. I know they said they would not be focusing on the high end cards this time around but we will see if that is the case. If they do start with the 8800xt though then the real question is will it preform better then the 7800xt but not as good as the 7900xt or will it preform about as well as the 7900xt but at 7800xt prices?

The cablemod thing is probably due to the latch softening due to heat and after that the cable can start sliding out if there is pressure at it in the right or wrong direction.

This whole port has been a total disaster and I'd hope they just pile on the 8-pin cables rather than try something like this again. At least anytime soon.

It is funny how many are mad at Cablemods for the thing and no one is blaming Nvidia for the horrible idea of putting the damn plug that requires an adapter in the first place. Even stock cables can come loose and melt the card's plug, it isn't just Cablemods, the problem is the secure clip at the top that holds the cable plugged in, it has too much wiggle room and because it has 600 watts running through the plug, that is around 50 amps running through the cable at 12 volts by the way, it will melt after it gets out a little bit, the shorter sense wires will not remove the problem it will just randomly shut the graphics card down when it doesn't detect the power and the customer might think their GPU is dead as most of them aren't informed about it, it will prevent a fire for sure, but still.

AMD releasing the RX 8000 series soon? Given how late they released the 77/78 series, I don't think AMD are capable of understanding when to release a product, and how to make a successor with corresponding numerical model numbers. The 8900XTX will probably be 5% less performance than the 7600 XT, because its AMD.

The problem with the 12VHPWR (or whatever they're calling it this month) is that it's simply undersized for the load. Standard engineering practice is to allow a 50% safety margin; meaning that if you need to pull 10 Amps, you use a connector rated for 15A. The issue is that the 12VHPWR connector has only a 10% safety margin.

The reason for the safety margin is to allow for all the "don'ts" we've heard regarding this connector; not fully seated (though the clip is engaged), torque on the connector from cables pulling sideways, and connect/disconnect cycles. It also accounts for manufacturing tolerance; a smaller pin in a larger socket, though both are within spec.

Hey, PCI-SIG... Talk to some old school ham radio operators. We went through the same thing a few decades ago with Molex connectors for power. (Yeah, like the ones on IDE drives.) Spec a 75A Powerpole connection on PCIe6, and you'll have 900W to play with.

Said it elsewhere, I'll say it here: The 12vHPWR connector is not adequately retained.
What should you do if you have one and you're worried about a connector melting? Hot glue. That's what's used inside the PSU to keep the fan power plug connected to the PSU's PCB (or the daughterboard that controls the fan).
If it works well enough for good PSU's to have a 10 year warranty, it's good enough for me. I shouldn't have to do that, but needs must.
Why does this work? Connector melts because it unplugs itself for a multitude of reasons. One scapegoat "you didn't plug it in right" reason, which is what they'll try to use to deny your warranty claim (lawyer up), and then the REAL reason, the connector is a piece of crap.
So what is one to do? Well, the connector becoming only partially not connected is the problem right? If the connector has a blob of hot glue bridging the two sides of the connector, it can't come unplugged.
Make sure to use high-temp hot melt glue for this, or if you can, an actually electronics-specific hot-melt adhesive that is purpose designed for holding connectors together (I'm sure that exists, you can't use "just anything" for that, probably).
Also save all your reciepts, including the ones for the hot glue you bought and the hot glue gun you used.
Document the process at every turn, including slightly abrading the exterior of the connectors to ensure the hot melt glue has a solid mechanical grip on both sides of the connector.
With that all done, run it, and don't hold anything back.
If it still melts, submit a warranty claim, wait for the (entirely predictable) denial, and then bring your findings to the Consumer Products Safety Comission if you live in the US, or whichever similar governmental organization you have in your country if you live elsewhere.
Simultaneously, file suit against Nvidia for negligent design of their products, and REPEATED AND CONCERTED EFFORTS to deflect blame. Nvidia wants this problem to stay hush-hush, your job is to make as much noise as possible.
If you get offered $1m to shut up, you take it only under the condition that you are still allowed to discuss this with whoever you wish (don't sign any NDA's at any price).
And then keep yelling about it until Nvidia actually gets off their collective fat corporate asses and FIXES THE PROBLEM ADEQUATELY (To this day, they have not, not even with the "re-design" to the "12v6x2" connector which is backwards compatible with the +12vHPWR connector.

Basically, it's time for a crusade, and at least one class-action lawsuit.

You forgot to mention the differences between a base reference model & an overclocked aib model which is important since it impacts performance & cost.

Also, some of us care about craftsmanship. Not every aib partner engineers the same & this is also important because it affects performance & cost.

learn about what you’re investing in. Very important

@gamermeld, I do not see why AMD would do something so stupid as not release RX8000 GPUs. The RX7000 series has not been a significant improvement over the previous generation and a lot of manufacturers did not even produce the usual range of cards, like MSI who has not produced the RX7800xts up to now but are still selling the 6800XTs, nor as the new 7700XT or 7600XTs. There i something wrong with that pin type period. There have been too many issue widescale with that form factor. Sorry NVIDIA, you dropped the ball with this one in trying to invent or introduce something new. If it isn't broke don't fix it or in this case break it. Your connector sucks and is clearly a design flaw.

From what I understand it wasn't CPSC that demanded a recall, but Cablemod who contacted them and basically said "We're worried and we want to issue a recall. Let's make it official." With that said the 12VHPWR connector design is terrible, and there are way better designs out there that are made to handle much higher loads than even the 4090 can pull. Even if you have to Frankenstein something for PSU feedback I'd say it would still be better than the disaster the 12VHPWR connector turned out to be.

Those iGPU power values cannot possibly be correct. There is no way Radeon 780M uses 50W on its own at stock settings when the Ryzen 7 7840U with Radeon 780M only uses a maximum of 35W for both the CPU and GPU.
A 6% clock speed increase from 2700MHz to 2881MHz should not almost double power usage. Speedway is not measuring the iGPU power usage properly, it's most likely reporting the combined CPU+GPU power.
