Def Leppard / Dio's Vivian Campbell Plays His Favorite Riffs

Vivian Campbell is no Steve Clark and vice versa. They’re just different. One’s not better than the other. Having said that, Def Leppard has been so fortunate to have someone of Vivian’s caliber in the group to “replace” Steve. And on top of that, someone who’s been loyal to Def Leppard for 3 decades, when we all know most other guitarists would have left long ago.

Vivian is such a badass, his solo's with Dio are legendary, I can remember just listening over and over to his guitar riffs. Just like Steve, Dio was never the same without Vivian and Def Lepard was never the same without Steve.

His riffs from DIO are incredibly iconic.

I saw Vivian in 84 with Dio. They were the cream of the crop for their era. I lost interest after Vivian left the band.

His Riverdogs & Last in Line bands are great! Was never a big Leppard fan. Even less when they started writing Cyndi lauper music for hits. Their songs were much better when Pete Willis was writing

Vivian is such a cool cat! Nice and laid back and a player who can both impress the pants of off you with shred and play really well within the service of the song, subdued controlled but all important.

Listening to him talk about dreaming of being the next Marc Bolan is somewhat sad since today young boys dream of being the next great rapper and using protools. 😢😢😢

Same for myself, only the song that hooked me, was day tripper. That opening TWANG did me in. That was 1973. But viv's solo in rainbow, is one of top 10 solos in metal. Ever. Total , pure, feeling. It was written, AS he layed it down. Then he had to copy it. Very hard lead to hit. For ANYONE.

I was born the same year and same day as Viv - 8/25/62. I also well remember T Rex - loved Bang a Gong (Get it on) when it came out in 71. Top 40 from 1970 to 1975 was some of the best music ever written. It was this amazing eclectic mix of material that ranged from hard rock to soul to folk to R&B, soft rock & funk. Not too many goofy bad tunes were written in those years. A lot of good stuff

Respect for Vivian's talent! Nobody knows what really happened between him and Dio, so I prefer enjoying their music and don't want to dig into scandals, money and all this shit. The world is full of this stuff, so I choose art.

I grew up in the eighties and loved the Power Station cover of bang a gong. Pete Willis doesn't get enough credit for his contributions to the Def Leppard hard rock sound. Def Lep became a pop/rock band without Willis and Clark BUT they are filthy stinking rich.

And he’s not too proud to play an epiphone, sounds as good as any Gibson

I really like Vivian Campbell.

He's so humble and gives credit where it's due. He'll take a back seat and let Phil Collen show off but he has the chops Collen will never have.

Must be REALLY hard to answer questions about songs he helped write and create for Dio knowing Ronnie screwed him and the other composers out of their rightful royalties. I imagine it would be worse to live with if he hadn't $nagged the Ded Fleppard gig though.

Why does it seem like the pickups change throughout this video? Some shots they look like standard pickups , you can see each individual pole, other times they look like sold lines
