Forget dealers, find someone you know who is known to get a new car every 2 or 3 years. Make them an aggressive offer when they want to unload and get the loan personally. So much less stress and the level of bullshit is minimized if not eliminated. It's not rocket science.

Simplest way to buy a new car.
Go to the dealership, Tell them what vehicle you’re looking for. When they start asking questions tell them you’re just there to drive the vehicle that you can afford it and leave it at that. If that have an issue with that leave. If they don’t great drive the car. Purchase car using cash and leave. That simple folks. I was in and out of the dealership in less then 45 minutes when I bought my new vehicle. That’s test drive included

always tell them you have your own financing, but then make sure you say "well, lets see what you can for me, as long as you keep me at the buy rate" and then make them show you what the bank offered. if they are worth doing business with, this won't be a problem. :)

Pre approval is the way to go.
Walked in to a dealership with a check from my credit union with an outstanding rate and made an offer, walked out with the vehicle in about a half hour.
Didn’t have to listen to a bunch of lies and snake oil salesmanship.

Screw. Stealerships.
There are no good guys all the way down from corporate, to manufacturing, to dealers, to financers. Only bad part about tariffs I saw was that it would prop up the US auto industry as it is. Let korea and Japan hurt them in manufacturing, but patronize no one's dealership

I live in Lakeland, Fl and there is one dealer group that has a sucker sticker on every new car on every line. Chevvy, Honda, Kia, and a couple more. One of the items on this $2499.00 sticker is a 20 year motor warranty. I'm 83 years old, so even under the best of circumstances, that warranty is useless. The only reason I'm even at that dealer is for service since I just moved here from Oklahoma.

Idk 8 years ago I went to a small dealership to get my first car. I was 21 years old and decided to finance a used 2015 mazda and my credit was in the 600s at the time. I had a 6% interest rate on the car which I thought was pretty good at the time for being young, low credit, and never financed a car before. Car was $11,000 with 40,000 miles. I still have it, paid off, and have never had an issue with the car. This might be true for the big name brand dealerships, but some smaller dealerships can give you good deals

The only APPROPRIATE way to get "pre-approved" is look at your checking account balance. Do you have the cash? Then you can proceed with the purchase of the car. Do you not have the cash? Then choose something else that you can afford.

This is atypical of the high-flying-big city dealerships where everything is overly polished and designed to make you feel good. You're more likely to find a halfway decent dealership (although it's not always the case) in a small town that's in the middle of nowhere. I like to talk to locals to find the best places. Gotta be willing to strike a conversation in a grocery store parking lot. Find the car you're looking for in the parking lot and approach the owner/driver; and be friendly and not creepy, and ask about the car (or truck, or whatever) and where they bought it and how that went. Most people in smaller towns will answer your one question about the car by telling you all about not just the car, but also about the dealership, the church the salesman goes to, the finance process, that they know the owner and that he smokes too much but is otherwise an honest man, the grandma that was also there that day looking for a small pickup that can carry flowers, her little dog and where she takes it for grooming, and the restaurant down the street that serves the absolute best "punk'n" pie.

All of that information will proceed to narrow down your choice to what you're really after WAAAAY quicker than any yelp review.

Surprisingly, I couldn't hear any sounds coming from the brakes during the test drive. I'm not sure what they did, but their deal was bad and their mechanics are sketchy as all get out.

When the dealer told me that the 2020 Honda Fit that he had quoted over the phone at 16.5 K had suddenly include 5 K in bullshit, I said no, he said he had to go talk to his manager. I said, sure, while you do that my wife and I will drive home and you will eat a discontinued Honda Fit. I ended up paying 16.5K. I got lucky. Five years later it's only 2 K less.
