In this application-based episode, Derek shows how to build a sensor which measures linear motion using mutual inductance. He shows how an LVDT (linear variable displacement transducer) works, and how it is wound around an air-core. He also designs a differential detector circuit using a precision op-amp, and he provides two LTspice simulations which show the drawbacks of using a simple diode vs a precision rectifier, so you can try it out on your own.
