Wondering if a cardioid mic can be made to work in place of the hands-free thing. I had no luck, but I suspect it's due to the mono connector. Do you think an appropriate adapter would allow it to work?

Don't ask me why, but, when I saw you standing in front of that Western style Photo the strangest images came into my head. You got two or three of your friends to help you make an Instructional Video. You were making a short comedy type clip of 'Gone With The Wind'. Not only were you in it but you had cutaways showing you as the Cameraman, the Soundman, Lighting and the Director. Isn't that weird?

I'm kind of curious to know how the smartphone + lavalier mic combo sounds. Some reasonable-sounding lav lics can be had for just a few bucks and it might be a well-priced middle-of-the-road solution.

My problem with this is that my phone and video camera don't stay in sync. I'll have to figure out how to stretch the audio by several seconds over the hour of a presentation. For short clips of a couple of minutes or less, the phone makes a GREAT tool.

I haven't got a smart phone yet, I do have an old Dictaphone though - might try that lol. Great video as you always do!  :o)

Great Vid Will, I've been playing about with seperate voice recorders myself, using an old samsumg S2, the recorder App i'm using tape to talk i think it's called, and records in WAV, my hands free kit gave a poor recording so i bought a cheap LAV mic online £5 which works very well.
Please keep the vids coming

That was a good demonstration of the different qualities optained. I use a RODE lav mic and a free sound record app (Hi-Q MP3) to record in WAV, it gives you format options, and then clean up the noise in Audacity. Works for me!!

If I had a shotgun mic with a boom pole, instead of buying a recorder, could I use my smartphone?

But what would the difference be if you used the LAV mic in the headphone jack of the phone? Surely you would get much better audio quality than a mic that comes with free headphones?
