Gladiator (2000) MOVIE REACTION!!! *Girlfriends First Time Watching*

Ash your girlfriend had the most awful takes when it comes to films. Marcus cannot fight because well he’s literally old and dying; especially since he fought countless wars, won, and gave great speaches to his comrades to fight for Rome during Marcus younger years. Theres was nothing that your girl that she preach about besides nonsense. This just proves women dont have good takes on practically anything.

Doesn’t have much to do with the movie but it’s something interesting about the Roman’s. I read somewhere that the Roman’s were the first ones to have like professional soldiers. They even invented the concept of retirement from military service. Something like if they survived and stayed around for like 15 years they’d get so many acres of land and maybe some slaves and some seed money. I always thought that was pretty interesting.

Marcus Aurelius was an educated man. A philosopher he wrote the book Meditations.

These tigers sound strangely like pumas. Nearly all big cats in movies do. Filmmakers just love that scream.

I do NOT think Maximum wanted his friends to try his food for him! Hagan the comedian did that on his own.

Ash is right, I've seen all of these movies already, and now I'm watching you two go at each other like strange gladiators. And yes, I'm entertained! Keep it up.

Honestly, I would have never watched gladiator fights if I had lived during that time. I don't watch boxing or any kind of real fighting today, either. I don't think people brutalizing each other for real is entertaining. In movies, that's totally different and I'm fine with that, but people killing or even hurting each other for fun and sport is just awful. And no, I'm not a pacifist. I've beaten up bullies in school with my fists and I'm armed in case I'm forced to justifiably kill someone in self-defense. I just hate bullies, and there is nothing worse than watching slaves be forced to kill each other, if this were real.

By the way, my feelings on this have absolutely no bearing on the quality of this movie, and I actually enjoy watching the combat because I know it's not real. For me, the line between fantasy and reality in this kind of context is hard and never to be crossed.

I was smart to establish early on that even while on the ground, Maximus still isn't helpless--he can effectively fight his way out of that situation and win.

Military leaders should always strive to see everyone from the point of view of their enemy. There's even a saying for that: "Know your enemy." That's intended to help you in battle, but it's nice from a moral perspective, as well.

GLADIATOR 2 with Denzel Washington, set during the reign of the Emperor Caracalla and also featuring Derek Jacobi (see him in the Roman Empire series "I, Claudius") should be interesting. Commodus, in reality, served a relatively long reign as Emperor but he did fight in mock Gladiator battles in the Flavian Amphitheater (now called the Roman Colosseum ). Gladiator deaths were not as frequent as portrayed in most movies. Gladiators tended to be kind of fat off a diet rich in beans. The fat layer protected them from many potentially fatal wounds. Juaquin and River Phoenix used to live near my area of Florida (Gainesville, Florida) and River's funeral service in Micanopy, Florida was attended by many Hollywood stars. The actor who played the head of the Gladiator school died during filming. The Romans had a notoriously difficult time dealing with the Germanic tribes and never fully conquered them. The German towns of Trier and Mainz have some good Roman ruins sites and the Emperor Constantine had a palace there. Marcus Aurelius was known as one of the greatest Emperors of the Roman Empire and I recommend his philosophical works.

You got it wrong with the VETO sign. VETO sign is thumb up and it means ”I'm against'!”. The reason why it also means life it's because for gladiators the DEFAULT decision is DEATH. So, if the leader it's not opposing, (thumb down), the defeated gladiator dies. In order for the gladiator to live the leader should oppose with VETO (thumb up). Western culture simplify this by translating the meaning of the final result, which is thumb up = good, thumb down = bad, but in fact in Roman culture thumb up = I'm against, thumb down = I'm not against. Because for gladiators the default outcome is death, the double negation turns into a positive thing and this is how the westeners translated this gesture.

I understand hannah, but you have to imagine the era of those times to understand people's actions, these are the origins of western civilization.
The whole West is oriented towards Greco-Roman culture, politics, music, art, theater etc.

Since you love this one.. I want to suggest Kingdom Of Heaven(Director's Cut). It's also done by Ridley Scott. It has Orlando Bloom in the lead. I guess you can call it 'Gladiator in the Crusades' because while not hitting the exact same notes... the Ridley Scott "feel" is there. I think you both will dig it.

My favorite movie for 23 years now, ever since I saw it in the living room with my step dad at 10 years old. I never forgot him so angry at Commodus lol. Best movie ever made.

Btw Maximus is a great study in Roman stoicism. He shows far more emotion than Marcus ever would have but this is a movie and not a 1700 years ago. Commodus really was a little shit and three himself ridiculous games where he would kill 100 lions or some shit.
