Buying a used car needn’t be an unpleasant experience, but just like most things there’s the right way and the wrong way.

That’s why in this exclusive video we asked world-famous used car dealer and Mr Wheeler Dealer himself, Mike Brewer, the things you should not be doing or saying to a dealer when you’re buying.

The only reason mike brewer stole cars from the people he brought them off is because putting some one in front of a camera and telling them its worth twice as little as they are wanting for it. Is because putting some poor sod in front of a camera that is being put on the spot and making them look stupid. No wonder he got a good deal.
I always felt bad for the people that had to deal with mike brewer because he is one of those car dealers who robs from innocent people.

Yes Mr Brewer
Your fall of it ( I am a wheeler dealer) I am going in with my size 10s .
That’s what you say ….. and you add up what you paid for the car and spent on it.
Never adding up the labour charges and saying you had a profit when you didn’t.
We aren’t dummies.

Car dealers are notoriously bent .. and will often look to tuck people up if the situation presents itself, it’s the women who often have the worst experiences, and the warranties that come with the cars are about as good as a hole in a kayak! The only warranties worth having are the manufacturers warranties 👍 always look to extend these if you can … car dealers for the most part are about as likeable as the Tax Man or an Estate Agent … Exactly 😏

NEVER tell a dealer "I want to spend "'X amount'" per month. I will guarantee you will spend that amount, even if you could buy the car for half that price. Go to your bank, credit union, etc., get a price from the dealer, ask what THEIR terms are, make your decision. After the dealer offers HIS terms, you can reveal your other options. It doesn't hurt to see if he can offer the better deal. They often can... but go in knowing your options.

I get the impression that this video is all about not upsetting the dealer, well let me tell you,I've dealt with a few very offensive dealers in my time, who give the impression that the customer is an idiot, who has not done their homework. They have patronised, been downright rude and told bare-faced lies, which seems a very strange way of endearing themselves to customers, and I'm not talking about some grotty little garage,I've experienced this behaviour at main dealerships. As Australian Car expert John Cadogan says, whenever you walk into a dealership, the clocks on the wall only tell one time i.e. 'bulls**t o'clock' ! So be warned if in doubt walk away. I personally like to buy my cars from home, yes I will go to the dealership,to look over the car, and maybe take a test drive it, but I will not commit to anything in the showroom. I will negotiate from home i.e. on home turf. In this way,a prospective buyer cannot have pressure applied to them.they can say I'll think about it and if the dealer is serious they will call back. Keep the advantage on your side of the deal, and remember if you miss out on a car, there's always another one.

What a hypocritical human being Mike Brewer is😮
I hear defensive response. You are exactly a dealer yourself and on wheeler dealers, everyone knows for a fact dealers bargain with the person they are buying the car from in the first place and not many people do pay asking price it’s in everyone’s DNA to try for a lower price. It’s the same way around. Some Car dealers are con men end of, so please don’t protect them and be honest yourself and understand our situations as well

Comparing buying a loaf in a supermarket and buying a car is just stupid, they are vastly different, car dealers are always trying to read you and if you give them too much info and are too open with them then they have you, so don’t take us for mugs, we know how you guys operate, we know you are trying to make money but we’re not stupid, i’m not going in there saying i want a car for £300/month….. you’ve now got me

Went to buy a car yesterday at a main dealer, had cash, asked for £1500.00 off an asking price of £14500.00. Haha no chance. No I don’t want any of your 7 different warranties. Just want that shitty second hand car, that I have no idea where it’s been.

Don’t get me started on ‘let’s do a finance check’ ‘but I’m buying cash’ ‘oh it’s just to show we’ve done it’. No, it’s so you can sell me a finance deal/rental for 5 bloody years at 9.9%

Car dealers/estate agents, same thing in my book.

Don’t give a crap about the dealers feeling, no wonder online sales have increased. Car dealers are now for the old and or stupid.

The trouble is so many dealers have the reputation of being horse traders and con men and renowned for ripping off women.
I recently helped a lady friend buy a Ford Fiesta Eco Boost B+O Car from a main Ford dealer. It was advertised with full spec including spare wheel, 12000 miles and full service. I asked to see the spare wheel along with a few other questions. Well there was no spare wheel which I knew because this model has the music equipment taking up the spare wheel area. These dealers just write any old crap to sell them. She bought it and after 8 months with milage now 18,000 miles had to spend over £1000 because the cataletic converter warning light came on after just after it had its service. This was not a warranty item ~ even after 18k miles!!!
Moral of the story is Ford Fiesta Eco Sports are a nightmare and expensive when they go wrong so avoid along with dealers. Buy privately and pay for an AA test to give a thorough inspection and save a fortune...

when i went in with my wife ,and SHE wanted some info on a car ,they immediately tried to get paperwork out to sell her it .and then just talked to me ,instead of her .
i told him i dont know why your ignoring my wife ,ive got no interest in the car ,and got her to walk out .

Dealers wouldn't be so bad if they weren't so bloody hungry. They know it's more convenient for people to buy from them, but then they also pollute the marketplace by driving their salespeople to spamming the world and curbing garbage from home.

Finding a real car for sale by a real person who simply wants a reasonable price is made impossible, not just by the dealer's pollution and extortion of their employees, but by dealers/flippers/curbers hitting refresh and snapping up every reasonable car they can find, even if it only makes them 100 bucks.

There are just too many desperados, and all the reasonabe people get scared off and have now offloaded their car shopping to someone thick- skinned enough not to give a crap if they insult the seller. So your advice is never going to hit your target audience.

This is all made worse by new cars being actively made into elaborate copyright protected proprietary rolling debt instruments that you swap like a cell phone contract or risk financial ruin if you hang on to them 1 minute past warranty.
The waste should be criminalized.

So all the "model research" in the world is not gonna do one bit of good when every possible car under 10 years old (in 2021) is one glitchy connector or black box module away from an expensive lesson about why repair shops are the only part of a dealership that is worse than the finance guy.

Come on Mike. Your advice is sooo 1990-late.

A headlight is 300 to 1000 now.
And 25 year old 4runners are pushing 50k US! And first gen Mustangs are a better status symbol than a new car. Why? Because everything else is junk ("value engineered" to generate revenue for the manufacturer, or be tossed). Do you really think that people are going to just show up and be nice to a dealer when they are made even more desperate by all the eyeballs that are tracking every car and cutting margins to ziltch?

It is a hopeless situation on both sides. Being a car salesperson is the fastest way to find job that will compromise one's ethics.
But buying a car is a nightmare for working people that has zero upside. And you are asking them to soften their negotiations.

Thanks for nothing.

And thanks for going to bat the most abusive organization after the Catholic Church. Have you not seen the inside of a dealership in 40 years? What sort of person can possibly work in such a place, and still afford to have a conscience after a few months.

Your sympathies are misguided, and seem quite self-serving.

A loaf of bread isn't worth asking for a reduction on as it's 90p. Spending 20k+ on a car is ,and all dealers have 'wriggle room' and targeted prices for selling used, new or part ex , hence, why shouldn't a consumer ask for a reduction? Wheeler Dealers is the prime example, how many times have you seen Mike paying for a car advertised at the full rate and not negotiate..? 🤔
