To Artie "Cool Daddy" Shaw, one of the greatest clarinetists and arrangers of all-time! To Helen Forrest, the voice of the Big Bands! I love ya both! My thanks for posting!

ОтветитьHave you listened to Bea Wains music she sings Deep purple
ОтветитьWho’s on trombone in this?!
ОтветитьWait a minute, did you dub the 78rpm Bluebird over "Alone Together" if so, swap it back to the original recording to the soundie...it's better. Had a crisper more energetic vibe.
ОтветитьThis is still one of my favorite Vitaphone shorts. I love how it opens with “Alone Together” and finishes with probably my favorite version of “Lady Be Good” the Deep Purple scene is lovely, it’s a very haunting song, in all honesty. The sound of the band, the crispness and how hot they were is why many revival bands today leave me dry.
ОтветитьMy favorite version of Deep Purple...The greatest big band there ever was...
ОтветитьIn February 1999, Artie was a guest at CSU Sacramento. He was asked about his professional relationship with Buddy Rich. Artie's reply: He was an exhibitionist and a wildman. In (probably) late 1939, Artie asked Buddy who was he playing for: Artie, himself, who? Buddy replied himself and his audience. Artie replied, ah, now see, there's the problem, you're not playing for me. You said Tommy Dorsey asked you to go with him. Maybe you should, I think you'll be happier there. That was the end of Artie's answer. Many years later, while Buddy was autographing a book of jazz players, he saw a picture of Artie on the opposite leaf and went into a tirade. So Buddy didn't forget Artie's invitation to quit.
ОтветитьRecorded in June of 1939 in Hollywood, CA. This is the earliest extant footage ever filmed of Buddy Rich. Buddy was 22 years old.
