Killing off John Connor/Edward Furlong at the beginning of Dark Fate was a total slap in face to every Terminator fan in this timeline or any other timeline.
Can a Terminator be sent back in time to prevent Tim Miller from directing Dark Fate ?

I think thats the story of the different timelines shown in the Twrminator films. Skynet is using human pawns to create divergent timelines for two reasons...
1. To give the Skynet new frontier to concore.
2. To protect the main prime timeline which controls all other timelines.

Honestly, killing John in this movie made perfect sense. First of all, we know he was not the original leader of the resistance because his own existence didn't start until after one of the time travel events, where Reece bangs Sarah and makes John and changes whatever the timeline was previously. For all we know, the identity of the "leader of the resistance" and the date of Judgement Day might have changed dozens of times by the time of the first movie. But also, in the next two movies, one of the big points would have been changing the timeline so that John doesn't get killed by Carl, along with finding a way to overcome Judgement day and the rise of the machines for good.

It would have been certainly interesting if John and Skynet actually survived, but due to John “faking” his death with the help of Sarah, the Future War ended up being fought on two fronts, with Legion being the “public front” while Skynet is the secret power behind the scenes fighting a shadowy war against John.

It would have been an cool twist to show at the end where it’s revealed that “Future Mexican Connor” was actually an Lieutenant to a still alive John Connor that was just too old to physically keep fighting in the frontlines due to time travel shenanigans pushing the Future War further into the future.

Also, for some reason I imagined Future John being portrayed by Micheal Beihn.
