We need to pray for them. Purgatory is real and souls do "time" for our sins in this life. Also, souls grow in grace to be made spiritually perfect. They don't talk to each other on the other side or to us (in most cases) because they do not want to sin and incur more debt. Besides, there's not much to say. Scripture says we are judged on every word from our mouths. They cannot pray for themselves, but they can pray for us. We too can work towards spiritual perfection to avoid such "jail time" on the other side. Multitudes of souls on the other side have no one to pray for them because most faithful on this side believe that "belief" is enough to get us into heaven and therefore do not pray for the dead. Most of my prayers are for deceased souls with the requirement that in return, they pray for us here on earth. Intercession and the charity of prayer is like 2 birds with one stone. Also, our stay in hell is not forever, God is not cruel, but He is corrective. The one and ONLY place in the bible that says eternal punishment (the gospel of Mathew) in the original greek is "ages of the ages." Hell and the lake of fire are eternal, but our stay there is not. Pray for souls and stop condemning everyone to eternal hell OR believing they waltz into heaven upon death. Everyone is deserving of spiritual correction here, few reach perfection in this life... the other side is where we are made complete and by grace are made "like god." Btw, in the original greek of the new testament, faith is not just belief, but rather is defined as having belief and obeying the persuasion of God's spirit to the point that we obey His commandments, a.k.a. spiritual perfection, meaning we are made holy by obeying every one of God's commandments, especially the NT commandments of love & mercy.
