I know this is an older post but had to add that those packets of Indian style dishes are surprisingly good very good for quick easy meals been buying those for years now.. oh yeah don't forget the rice...i usually wait till they are one sale though

I always found the pie iron sandwich makers useful. I could have a cheese and onion toastie with a brew from my flask in minutes. Game changer.

How does the dehydrated stuff work when you're in an area that doesn't have a lot of water?

I think you can actually boil those tasty bite meals in the bag if your pot is big enough. Save on clean up!

I recently came back from a backpacking trip and vowed to never again buy another freeze dried meal. While making my way down the trail, I recalled watching your videos about trail food… Today while grocery shopping, I was drawn to some of the items from your videos. I finally feel satisfying my hunger on trail by being lazy, and willing to pay for it are over… You know its bad when you truly hate what you packed for dinner - and gotta eat it.

Love your videos! Letting people see that the cheep grocery store stuff is exactly the same or better than the crazily priced "camping food." Also showing people that you can be creative and do it your way hiking. Heck, the sherpas used to hike up Everest in sandals and blankets for crying out loud, they didn't have any "gear."

Well I've been convinced to try backpacking this year. I'm curious about the pre-cooked chicken sausage, does it not need to be refrigerated?

Two years late coming to this video... FYI: I'm in the UK and we can buy the Idahoan Mashed Potato brand packs here in Britain. If these are your prices TWO YEARS ago (and if I'm reading the prices right?), it looks as if you were paying $1.69 per pack OR a 'Club Price' of $4.00 per 3 packs.

If I'm right, we buy them for less - duh! Today (March 2023) they are sold for only £1.00 per pack* in most supermarkets. At the current exchange rate (today - just checked) $4.00 = £3.28.

*Also nothing additional to pay at cash desk, as all UK prices are shown inclusive of any tax, so we pay the price shown! And I'm guessing your prices have increased over the last two years.

I have travelled many times to the US and always found your food prices (grocery shopping) to be very high in comparison to the UK (and I'm in London, which is the highest prices in the whole of Britain).🤔Funny old world😃

What I find funny about these instant food choices, where to most of us.. We never eat them. There are people who this is their diet day to day. High sodium and full of preservatives. When I climb, I know I will eat things I will not normally consume, but it is not a long time of eating it, but what I do notice.. I swell up with water retention when I come back down from climbing. Is it the altitude? Is it some of the crap I have been eating? a bit of both?

a lot of these meals have water already added. that's extra weight. backpackers should carry as much dried food as possible. something to consider

Great ideas! I also take dehydrated refried vegetarian beans from Santa Fe (company name). The down side is I cannot find them anywhere in the PNW, so I have my family Texas mail it to me. H-E-B in Texas seems to be the only store that carries them.
