Over the past several years, a lot of the older members of the FNAF community have been feeling less than impressed with the current state of the franchise and more nostalgic for the story, tone, and aesthetic of the original 3-4 games. You would think these “fans” would eventually stop reminiscing about the old days and move on to something more suited to their age. What’s keeping these invested in this franchise that’s been marketed toward children for years at this point? There are several reasons for everything I just mentioned, but one of the biggest contributors is a little thing called FNAF VHS, which drew heavily from another little thing called analog horror. I'm focusing on the FNAF VHS Problem in this video.

I think the VHS tapes are the dark side of the games while not the main theme you cant really just brush them off as A Childs game. A great example of stuff being made for "kids" is Star wars the Clone Wars a "Kids" show that includes political intrigue assasination beheadings terrorism firebombing of civilians. Something can be made for kids but can also be enjoyed by the older fans

I may be an older FNAF fan but I love the newer stuff too, like, Security Breach made me realize something I wanted that I never knew I wanted (Freddy being like a caring parental figure).
Tbh both sides are good, and I love the FNAF VHS stuff, it's fun to get that old rush of fear while waiting to see what Scott/Steel Wool puts out next =3

I just want more FNAF in general. Thanks for making this explanation ^u^

Local58 is such an interesting channel my DnD campaign runner(the DM) who also happened to be my math teacher at the time showed the whole class the channel most of my classmates didn’t like it but me and a few others did enjoy it

Also with the fnaf Fans thaf are still stuck on the first 3-4 games, that’s perfectly fine, I like all the games even Security Breach even though it kinda sucked cuz of how kid friendly they made it…Ruin fixed it by getting rid of our lifeboat, Freddy, and the new lifeboat they give us a Vanny mask that has a timer, and the longer you wear it the higher the risk of M.X.E.S showing up. It actually brought the horror factor back into fnaf and i was happy about that, and I was so hyped for the movie, despite it not being as gore filled as we hoped but it was still good for what we got, and now with Help Wanted 2 coming out now we have more game content that I’m sure most fans are excited for

Apparently, Battington was told to stop making remakes because he made a very tasteless joke about Martin Walls (creator of the Walten Files) being dead because of his sudden inactivity on Twitter.

I could be wrong though.

Mascot Horror fans in general need to be more open about the growing schism in the fanbase between the fans who have been with the genre since the beginning and new fans. Mascot horror currently has two audiences: The 8-15 year olds of today, and the people who were 8-15 when FNaF first released and are all now 17-26 years old. This normally wouldn't be an issue but as it stands, only the 8-15 year old audience is being served while the 17-26 year olds have been thrown out to fend for themselves. I think the content of the FNaF VHS tapes and how it's skewed how the general public perceives the franchise is a perfect reflection of older fan's frustrations.

People need to take a page from the Harry Potter fandom - if you like the fan work more than the cannon material, just be a fan of the fan work. There is an entire subsect of the HP fandom that is following JUST the Marauders stuff that was written by fans. The Marauders barely appear in the original work, nearly everything people like about it is fanmade.

As an older fan, the original FNAF VHS series is how I would have wanted FNAF to end. Cool lore and that’s about it.

My problem with the newer games is that it seems to have so much fan service I don’t take it seriously. And if I’m honest, I don’t care. Let the Scott man do what he wants.

wouldn't really label that as "fans", cause well they are fans, just fans of a different part of the series.
you don't have to like everything a series produces to be a fan, hell as a series becomes bigger and bigger that becomes fanboy behaviour.

most franchises have a dedicated classic fanbase and while you don't have to cater to them, it wouldn't hurt to have spinoffs to appeal to them.
like how mario makes both 2D and 3D games to appeal to both those types of fans, 2D mario players aren't fake fans because they dislike the later 3D games
much like newer fans don't have to enjoy nes games from before they were born to be a fan.

not particularly a big deal and doesn't effect the content of the video but it's a really annoying toxic sentiment i've heard for literal decades and it needs to die.
but yeah to say they aren't catered to is also unfair noting the fanverse exists explicitely for those older fans who got so invested they got into the fangame scene.
which again, if they're still an audience of the series then they're obviously still fans. if they dislike an overly comedic game at the cost of horror then fair enough.

and at the same time if newer fans prefer lighter scares in favour of more funnies then that's also fair. there's obviously more to this divide of course like the story telling but the cats out of the bag now so it can't really be steered in either direction lol

I will no doubt admit FNAF was one of those things that should have ended when it had the chance. To this day, I still think UCN should have been the last FNAF game, and it would have been a good ending/sad ending at the same time.

Help Wanted was more of a retelling, while also reflecting the past, and it was a cool revamp of the classic FNAF games. Even HW is one of Matpats favorite FNAF games.

What keeps me hooked, is how interesting and cool it is, despite its flaws and bad eggs in the community.

Does FNAF deserve to die? No

Does it need to end at some point? Yes

Is it an amazing franchise? Kind of

Is it a good franchise? Sure 👍

Overall, I think FNAF is something I’ll grow out of eventually, but I don’t regret being part of it sense 2014. IDK when I’ll grow out of it, but given to how far it’s gone, god knows when it’ll end for good? 🤔

As an older fan, I'd like to say that I have always hated the insinuation that FNAF was always and only marketed mainly towards children.

It's always a common misconception that if something doesn't have blood, swearing, or gore, that automatically makes it "made for kids" and not simply able to be enjoyed by more than just adults. It's always tied to this weird "us vs them" mentality with media that always bothered me.

In the beginning FNAF never seemed like it was made primarily for kids, and that energy was carried through much of the franchise up to a point. After a while yes, I can absolutely see that FNAF is definitely marketed towards children through the marketing focus on kid's media and entertainment like books, the movie, and toys. It's all very clear what the focus is.

And to be honest the whole "For Kids" reasoning was never why I fell off from FNAF anyways. I personally stopped following the series once FNAF SL and PS transformed this supernatural horror tragedy into a Sci-Fi Mystery that needlessly explains unimportant stuff. It makes sense given Scott's track record with his older games, but it isn't for me.

What I like about the FNAF Analog horror isn't the gore, or the over the top scary designs. It's the fact that most of these stories bring us back to the original core of why I personally REALLY got into FNAF. The tragic story of a monstrous psychopath who senselessly took the lives of innocent children, whose souls now seek retribution. No complex overexplaining. No Mimics, or immortality ramblings, or AI Ghost Killers. Just a good old fashioned horror story that feels real, but with a supernatural edge. Still, don't mistake me for some old fart wanting to return to the glory days. FNAF 1-3 was perfect, and I am content with loving that little bubble of story as it was, with zero desire for a continuation of that type of tale.

As a longtime FNAF fan, I liked FNAF VHS, I thought it was an interesting take on the FNAF series, however, I think of it as its own separate entity from the games. It’s like it’s own universe, like how the books are in a different universe from the games. I just appreciate all different things for their own differences and similarities. I enjoyed the games as a young kid, the books as a pre-teen and the VHS series as a teen/adult. I grew along side FNAF as a franchise and I still have a soft spot for it in my heart to this day. I just wish fans could separate them instead of trying so hard to put them all against each other. They’re all good in their own ways and serve their own purposes for different types of fans and I appreciate what everyone had to bring to the table for FNAF.

What I always like about FnAF is that the dark narrative of the games about afton going on a unaliving spree and children possessing the suits they're stuffed into was always hidden or in the background. It lets your imagination do most of the work to create something scary. Meanwhile, the fnaf vhs tapes shove gore and jump scares down your throat while ignoring the dark comedy aspect of the franchise. Like fazbear entertainment's straight up negligence of everything that's happened.

I definitely do like the VHS series for the novelty. I’m someone who likes whatever you call the genre of people who take nostalgic things or things meant for kids and twist them in interesting ways so as a consumer I enjoy the FNAF VHS series. That said it’s def not what FNAF should be or should have been. I agree that modern FNAF is not scary. Personally I feel like FNAF 4 was the last “scary” game in the series. I like sister locations tone but never found it scary but that’s a personal thing. Everything else after though isn’t. Now fans who loved the series when it was scary might also then enjoy the VHS series because it takes the idea and concept and turns it into something different and scary and sometimes unique. However yes, FNAF was never a series that was gory or TRIED to be scary. It was scary in subtle ways. Design, sound, atmosphere, that’s what made FNAF scary, not blood, disfigured images of children etc. now of course all of this is great material to make really gory horrific stories like the VHS tapes which is why I enjoy it but it’s def not something the series itself needs to be. In terms of the movie I felt that if FNAF stayed the Same, as in it kept what made it scary and didn’t delv into campy meme sometimes cringe culture, some gore would probably not be warranted but expected for it being horror. I mean M3gan was another pg-13 movie made by blumhouse and that was much bloodier. I feel like for a movie it may make a bit more sense if the games were still scary, not that it needs it because again, FNAF is a series that never relied on the use of it. That said with modern FNAF, is a whole can of worms I’m not gonna get into now but I feel it’s swayed the way fans, especially younger fans view FNAF and the VHS series as “oh it doesn’t belong” because it’s too kid friendly now that any different take that has to do with gore or blood or any other horror is “not in the spirit of FNAF” at least that’s what I’ve seen people online say.

I dislike the FNAF movie but not because I want it to be like VHS tapes. It was boring, uninspired, unfaithful to the lore and gameplay, the screenplay is mediocre at best and I don't like the actors depictions of the characters. The only thing that makes it FNAF is the animatronics. I don't understand how so many supposed true FNAF fans like this movie which is nothing like the games or novels. I wish the fanbase didn't like it so that the creators would be forced to reconsider their direction.
