James Kalm has, over the decades, established a network of painters, artists and friends. One of your correspondent’s greatest joys is having an opportunity to follow the artistic evolutions of these creatives over time. Kalm has followed the work of Gary Petersen since the early aughts, and continues to watch Peterson’s development of a hard-edged abstraction which also presents whimsical echoes of master like Stuart Davis and Shirley Jaffe. The artist makes a strolling commentary on “The Shape of Walking” with your reporter.
Greg Lindquist is also a long-time close acquaintance. Meeting at the editorial meetings for the Brooklyn Rail, this relationship has expanded during years of mutual studio visits. “Slow Burn” is a selection of modestly scaled pastiches, some with digitally carved frames, that mashup internet mems, dumbass stunts and Monster Truck displays. These wacky antics may have some claim to political resistance to climate change policies, and coal country legacy.
