Great video but there is one thing you forgot to point out. While it is very nice Genesis/MD/Sega CD/32X has native RGB output there are unfortunately plenty of games on the system like the Sonic series, Streets of Rage 2&3, Shinobi III, Castlevania Bloodlines, Socket, Toy Story, Beyond Oasis, Earthworm Jim, Vectorman, Comix Zone which use dithering effects to create transparencies and extra colors via RF or composite signals. So if you want to see these effects come into play in the games I mentioned we got no choice but play on RF or composite or else we will see raw vertical lines or checker board patterns :(

The only thing I would change on the genesis would be double the on screen colors, one more sprite layer and add an extra PCM chip. I would not want to risk the integraty of the Music on the system as it is already excellent.

what games actually use stereo sound ? I wonder if it is the same to just use a Y splitter instead of a 1/8th those are normally not shielded well

Wait, did you just say you can't hide all the overscan stuff on modern TVs?

I presume this issue is present on the SNES too then (not that I've noticed it)?

The jailbar mod does not have to be destructive..

The easiest and cheapest way to preserve composite, is to desolder C28, move and resolder it as open circuit, then ad a toggle switch in between and boom Composite or RGB jailbarfree at your leasure..
The chroma subcarrier line mentioned here gives the most noticable results by far, and by most, this is sufficient and a fairly easy mod to perform..

BTW love this channel has some of the greatest retro content of the ol days..

I’ve got an interesting set up for my mega drive, Input 1 on my TV has RGB from my retro consoles, and Input 2 RF through my VCR. So I often find it fun to switch between RGB and RF to see the difference, it’s really interesting. It’s also cool to have it linked up so if I do something amazing like beat a game I can record my victory to tape and replay them later.

Okay here's my problem: To get my 32X working on an HD TV I'm using an Analogue Mega SG plugged into my Mega CD 2. I have Analogue's DAC connected from the Mega SG/Mega CD 2 to the 32X. The problem is while I can get great picture without the 32X hooked up if I use the 32X the best I can manage is composite picture with the DAC. What else do I need to connect and where?

whether or not the console could support it, if it was capable of wide screen 720x576 i/p this was the limitation of the vcd format and limitation on the s-video bus, if you are trying to force 1080i/p on something that couldn't support it you are going have sync issue

most rgb adaption cables only support component output

so the reality of rgb on 8bit/16bit/32bit consoles you likely be limited to a max resolution of 730x576 whether you used component or s-video, resolution varies on composite pending on what the tv screen you had been using as a display option

best resolution option for composite was a 32 inch tv from sony ...

dtv has fuck all to with anolog connections

noting if you had a tv that would support a wide screen of 14:9-16:9 default layout would of been 720x576...

progressive scan was never supported by and very few console games supported 1080i due to limitations of either game or hardware limitation of dvdrom being used at the time

you will likely look at end of life cycle for 1080i in some consoles and hit & miss support in series 1-5 and limited release over series 6-9 on ps2 and not sure on a xbox/360 support..

at best 720x576 across snes/n64/cube/wii/wiiu/switch loose support to 1080 i from cube/wii/wiiu/switch

Bus limitation on s-video was 720x576 so i suspect there will be no benefit in using component cables across snes-switch (nintendo) what was applicable for ps1-ps3 (Sony) with ps3's component cable 720x576 ps1, 1080i ps2 and ps3 however from s-video perspective 720x576 i/p was only used..

Noting for the most part scart where in use in the world would be limited component or s-video specifications

I can't really comment over sega to much whilst I did have access to their consoles as a kid i don't think 1080 will be even plausible on any console they had released i suspect to fix ram limitations on the dc and saturn ram expansion most likely would of of been north of 64MB of ram to fix any graphical play back issues..

i think what killed sega as a hardware vendor was the lack foresight of going to with dvdrom from the saturn and dreamcast..

sega was always top dog in the graphics dept however lack of true hardware development kind of killed them

Understand what you are talking about in regard digital tv transmission VS analog counterpart vs analog composite/component/s-video/scart/jp-21

I used to take what you guys said as gospel but I realised you take the quest to take video to the most high end extremes and after spending a mint following your advice I cant say the results really were worth the price and time. Now my rig is just composite video on an old TV, a genesis and a saturn and honestly it does the trick.

Out of all the Genesis and Mega Drives I have tested. The Japanese Mega Drive model 1 VA 1 revision has the best RGB image. It slightly has a cleaner RGB image and the colors pop a little more than the other revisions of Genesis and Mega Drives revisions.

..almost I sent my 32x for s-vid (the shit fabled s-vid box from Taobao worked for mere seconds until yucky red tint always) but read it'd wreck the option for HDRetrovision's super component cord cuz it's sync-on-composite not composed-sync?

Personally I like component just for sixth-gen but I can't blame buying HDRetrovision's stunning cord! Now another boobtube CRT to get repaired to have component outdoors

Maybe someone can clarify for me. So I have a model 1 Genesis, sega cd model 1 and a 32x. Each require their own power adapter. But I can use the audio just from the Genesis. For video however, I will need an adapter that goes from the 32x to the Genesis then a SCART to my framemeister since the CD uses the Genesis as a passthrough I wont need to include it in the loop? Do i have that correct?
