They were basically good at nothing except massacring civilians and otherwise conducting genocide. The main reason for this is that SS officers weren't promoted for their leadership record, but for their ideological fanaticism and supposed racial purity. Soldiers at war need to be able to adequately calculate risk and make decisions that preserve the lives of their men and avoid unnecessary fights, and this was the complete opposite of what this system did in the Waffen SS. While the Wehrmacht, led as it was by actually competent military men, made military gains, the SS, led by people who thought that Jews were a threat to Europe and who were good at nothing except looking scary and shouting evil things, was regularly overwhelmed by poorly-armed partisans, often turned against them by their own pointless campaigns of ideological terror.
