Is there any reason why I shouldn’t dissolve the Neptune’s Harvest crab and lobster shell in water for a one time feeding? I didn’t have this product when I planned everything, but I would love to give them a good drink of it. Thanks for the help!

I work at a Mexican restaurant and we go through a ton of sour cream. I use the buckets as pots, and use certain boxes for compost and lay down in garden to control weeds.
most Mexican restaurants or other restaurants have cardboard bins they will let you get them and they have more buckets that build up than they will use. They will be happy in most cases to unload them.✌❤

Comfrey and weeds in a garbage can with water left to ferment six weeks can provide a great/free liquid fertilizer. I saw this yesterday on older Morag Gamble: My Permaculture Life YT Channel. Loved that idea and your money saving ideas too. Glad I just found your channel!

On the subject of using anything and everything for containers, I have an old, holey (drainage!) 14 ft Jon boat for my latest (and greatest) container! I just sat it up on blocks to make it easier for my old back to access. There are 3 sections, so I'm composting in the largest one.

The story, if you're interested, of how I came about getting it... my SIL had this old boat and every rivet in it had popped. Shouldn't a mother-in-law be offended, even somewhat suspicious, being offered a boat full of holes? 🤨🤔 Nay, I say! I saw a really cool raised bed (even if he did want me to take it out fishing!) 😉😅

As are all your videos this was so helpful. Transplants here in the Poconos run about a dollar apiece at most of our local nurseries. Since we also have many farms nearby we have been able to get compost fairly cheaply. thank you so so much for your advice. since I found your site, my garden is serving not only our family, but many of the neighbors as well. Best wishes on your new home!

Wow - I never thought of doing that with tomatoes. Thanks! That gives me an option for succession planting to extend the season when it comes to determinate varieties. And I can attest to how easy it is to propagate basil; I often harvest a bunch and put it into jars of water in my kitchen. Invariably, I have lots of roots by the time I've finished using that bunch.

For tomato I connect two el. conduct tubes 10’ apart in ground with the third one connecting them on the top. Again - a cheap 6” net running from the top tube. Like upside down U. 10’.

I use for years 4’x8’ wire mesh, 6”, from Home Depot which is used for concrete.
I connect two of them on the top with a zip locks. They are 4’ apart down. As an arch for cucumbers, beans…They do not need more support.
One my bed is wider, so I run a green nylon net (6” )from Amazon in the middle - from the top of the arch.

I'm in Phenix City Alabama, what would be a good mulch to use? I just tried my hand at no till this year, but I'm hearing that some mulch attracts pests and snails, so far I have used pine shavings lightly around my plants that are in pots and the same for my small garden.

You can make raised bed borders with old garden hoses and old pipes. I staple mine to the ground. Staples can be made from old dry cleaner hangers. Water barrels can be covered with dense mesh to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs or whatever other nasty things they lay :) I wonder if heirloom seeds get affected by same family plants growing nearby?..

Free fertiliser......I don't have the time/patience for worm farms BUT since I already had the worm farm trays I've been filling them with nearly done compost and lots of worms and I end up with heaps of worm castings in a few months. I use the usual sunlight method of separating the castings without getting all the worms, toss in more well rotted compost, and let the process go again. Evidently compost worms really like broken down materials best.

I’ve always done flowers and I have a green thumb in that category. This will be my first summer trying out vegetables. Where I live our growing season starts late May till end of September….longer for carrots etc. I got free food grade buckets at our local grocery store’s baking department..they were just throwing them out. I bought an organic potting soil, I am picking up some organic fertilizer/mulch….I have to buy starter plants cause I don’t have a greenhouse where I can start seeds…will let you know how it goes.

PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE be careful when accessing city/town compost sites. Check to see if there are any invasive worms in your area before you do. Our land is infested with Asian Jumping worms that (I suspect) we got when we brought compost in from our town site. I am in Massachusetts Zone 6a, and I'm doing a ton of container gardening because my big beautiful raised beds are infested. So please be careful!

Great video. I saved money on gardening infrastructure and fertilizer, like trellises by using crepe myrtle branches that I cut back in December, and saving them. These branches are 4-12 feet long, and perfect as stakes, and I've tied them together with string. I also burned some of what I pruned, and I can save these garden wood ashes in a pot, to add if ever needed as a fertilizer. Keeping my fall leaves, means I have my own free mulch which definitely saves me from having to water so much. I turn some leaves into leaf mold and compost which I can add to my soil.

Great tips for all, yes I've noticed the prices for starter plants have definitely gone up everywhere. But after learning how to start from seed I avoid buying any starters for the most part as I love the variety choices. I use containers for my garden, almost all grow bags and I reuse them. I just wash them out and they are ready for the next plant. Drip irrigation is awesome and not that expensive, cost under $100 total for my container garden and I add hoses as needed. It sure beats standing out in the 100+ degree "feels like" temps we've been having this week in central Florida!! Honestly I would spend way more for not having to sweat like crazy for a 1/2 hr watering almost everyday. Definitely the best investment I've made to my garden thanks to your instruction!
