We don’t know about people 100 years ago, but I’m in my late 50’s and for me I really didn’t figure the world out till I was 25-26. I didn’t go to college so I suspect people who did thought it was a couple of years younger, but it was probably about the same time

"Ordinary Men " is an utterly brilliant book by an American history academic ( Christopher Browning ) who not only describes the process and narrative of the atrocities performed by this group of Ordinary men but tries to produce a rationale and explanation of the psychology behind their actions . It is a stunning exposition of how humanity can act in a deteriorating fashion and a demonstration of the Jungian Shadow at work and something we all need to understand and be vigilant about . Peterson is a great thinker and a great exponent of the areas of Psychology that most avoid or deny. The problem is that despite the history we have not learned from the lesson and in so many ways political systems act as a repetition of this cruel and inhuman behaviour.

Another book that is good is Masters of Death by Richard Rhodes! It’s about the SS Einsatzgruppen in Russia 1941-1943! There was only 3000 of them supported by Police Battalions, Ukrainian and Lithuanian Auxiliaries. Even some Wehrmacht units were involved. Excellent Book

If one would like to read another work similar to Ordinary Men, I would recommend The Scarlet Memorial by Zheng Yi. It's not about the Holocaust, it's about the massacres in Maoist China, and it is absolutely harrowing. It recounts some of the nastiest most despicable and horrifying acts of mass-murder and fanatical cannibalism I've ever had the misfortune of reading.
