The way he laughs at his own dark sides reminds me of larry david. From what i've seen in YT from this special, he didnt just show how he was an addict, he shows himself being selfish, or lying, or being manipulative, even cruel. Not many people can do that, its weird and amazing.

No self respecting person in recovery would pay money to listen to you tell your story. I've heard your story 10 times over, if I've heard it once in 22 years of being sober !! When you started roasting your friends who were trying to help you, that's when I turned it off and swore I'd never listen to another John Mulaney show !! We don't pay to listen to stories, that's why we go to meetings !!

I had problem that started with prescription painkillers. But the thought of going to rehab sounded worse than kicking my addiction on my own. Which I managed to do somehow.

To be honest though i doubt he looked like little John Mulaney inside rehab but more like crumpled and sad

For those saying "Eh. I like his earlier stuff better." You're pretty much saying you prefer him coked out and high on pills. Because that's what his earlier stuff was.

I'm not condoning what he did, or how he acted, especially towards his ex wife. I am saying that sobriety is HARD, and creating comedy that comes from a place of honesty and vulnerability is even harder. Especially after years of living a lie. He had a reputation as a clean wholesome comedian, and people LOVES that persona. But if he has maintained that lie, he would have died. Now he has to start from scratch, and people don't know what to think about him. I bet HE doesn't even know who he really is now.

Whether or not this special is as funny as his previous ones is up for debate, I'm sure. He's still funny, and at least he's being honest now. Honest humor is the best humor.

I didn't know he was in rehab

Now I wonder if I was in a help-care place with celebs...I dont think so. I also wasn't going in for substances, depends on the state and the facility. Also:the reason you're there. Un ah live ing is a thing that puts people together and shuts others out. It's taken seriously and I'm so glad and thankful cuz I was seriously not doing well. Both time I turned myself in, cuz I couldn't don't on my own anymore, right then. No shame in the perils of LIVING OUR LIVES.

This was so funny, I couldn't stop laughing the entire time one of my favourite Mulaney specials. So happy for John, still love him! We must have compassion for those struggling. So glad he is doing better now. ❤

I used to like him until he gave a platform to a transphobe like dave chapelle. until he gave dave chapelle an opportunity to tell jokes that harm an entire community of people.

This reminds me of my parents visiting me in 2007 and we saw Dane Cook at Denny's and they were like, "Go get a picture with him," and I like Dane Cook fine but I didn't want a picture of him with me, and as we were pulling out, we saw him pacing back and forth in front of the Denny's; and years later on a podcast, I heard Dane Cook talk about strategically finding strangers to sleep with by sitting in a hotel lobby and "circling my face" was the figurative phrase he used, just like the gesture Mulaney uses at the end of this video here.

I believe the other rehabilitating people were respecting John's recovery process by not acknowledging his fame.

Wow why do addicts think we want to know about rehab. I tried to watch the whole special but geez what a bore. I hope he doesnt do this forever now talk about rehab. Yeah we get it but why do addicts always want a prize for doing the right thing and being normal and not using drugs
