However, the Old Summer Palace is most famously remembered for its destruction in 1860 during the Second Opium War. British and French troops looted and set fire to the complex, resulting in extensive damage and the loss of countless cultural artifacts.

Today, the Old Summer Palace remains in ruins, and its original beauty can only be glimpsed through historical records and a few surviving structures. It stands as a poignant reminder of both China's imperial past and the impact of foreign invasions on its cultural heritage.
