#2 Is a pro hack. Your legs are just too meager, you fear the external frame pack hiker...

Bring gear that has multiple uses to save weight. Cast iron skillet is also a water vessel, a hammer, self protection, a pillow and even a frisbee.

Please, I've been backpacking for 50 years! I've forgotten more than this guy will ever know. Yet, is this a fyck'n ad or a opinion on hints. Either way I stopped after the ad which seems to be this videos purpose!
Just remember, never leave out the first aid kit always attached to the outside. Have a super sharp hatchet and knives, with good paracord and 55 gallon 6ml. trash bags. I carry a dz. Best emergency keep it dry item ever!
Makes a great rain coat and even a shelter just in case! For lightweight I carry a spool of good fishing line! 2 actually one in case I want to catch a fish, or small game bird. Besides, paracord stretches some when wet and you can always double, triple, or quad the fishing line to add strength. And at the end of your outing just stuff that fishing line in a zip lock bag and carry it out easy peazy.
Then again, I put everything in waterproof zip bags my socks are put in with powder and it's nice to have clean powdered socks never can take enough. Too many is enough. I once saw a couple on a trail soaking their feet they had what I call paper socks. I swear those things are for house slippers only. I stopped, tossed them 2 large compressed towels, ( 18 x 22 ) and 2 pairs of socks without saying a word.
Backpacking can be like a stay at the Marriott if you go prepared. I may be extreme carrying a retractor, climbing rope, carabiner. I just wear the climbing belt I clip stuff on it. Like a bear bell, bear spray, and a air horn. A air horn let's everything know your coming! Lol I've always wondered, birds and squirrels are like forest guard sentries. They bark and squawk at you alerting the neighborhood. How come the bears don't pick up on that and skadaddle! Things ya ponder.
Well, happy backpacking hope I have someone help and ideas. Oh thing I did was take my trekking pole and put a climbing axe head on it. Aluminum and modified for a skinny tapered shovel like a adze that is my handle. Great for digging a poop hole, or fire pit. Happy trails!

These lists of things are valuable. You don't have to sit there with a piece of paper and write everything down. Just fast forward thru and see if you spot something that might help you. That is similar to talking to experienced hikers. You may pick up some tip or hack that helps.

I say don't worry about how they pack, what they wear and so on. That's one way to practice minding your own business for further enlightenment. They'll find their own way like most do . Unless asked, minding ones own business is practiced in all of life.

Those last comments were very true. My first time backcountry camping, didn't do a lick of research. We didn't want to buy a bunch of fancy lightweight stuff, because we didn't know if we would even enjoy backcountry camping. My poor boyfriend carried a heavy 5 person tent for the two of us. We didn't bring sleeping bags, because we thought a sheet would be warm enough. Our "sleeping pads" aka yoga mats were so uncomfortable that I didn't sleep the entire 2 nights. In the end, I loved it and have started upgrading my gear now. But you don't now until you are out there, what you wish you had or think you might need... Or if you will even enjoy it to want to go again

Another tip with hiking poles...I spend almost every weekend in Linville Gorge Wilderness and the trails climbing out of the gorge are tough...It has taught me to use both poles at the same time...Plant both in the ground in front of you at the same time and use your upper body to pull yourself up these climbs..Most hikers I see use one at a time and so did I until I found out the best way to get optimal use of my poles...Common sense tells me two arms and two legs together are stronger than one arm and two legs..

Wow, this is very pretentious 😬
The reason why people put things on the outside of their backpack is for easy and fast access, also it allows one to carry more. This is totally personal preference and isn’t a mistake at all. The same goes for the cast iron skillet, some people want to carry more weight on purpose, again it’s personal preference.
The alltrails app……how does this guy know this is what most people use and they don’t use anything else? And so what, at least they’re out in the wild…..everyone has to start somewhere right 🤷‍♂️
This whole video is just about this guy trying to prove he’s doing it the best way with the best methods, when in truth it’s mostly down to personal preference. I genuinely thought he was going to show the best gear to have or best ways to walk or how to track live weather…..you know, like things that are actually helpful 🤦‍♂️

There are things we can control, and other that we just can't. The only thing we can do is prepare and research. All is good: videos, magazines, forums, fiends, shop workers etc. And nothing will compare with the actual real experience. So,a bit of truth and good in everything

As someone who bit the bullet and did my first trail this summer, I learned sooo much from that trip compared to watching videos. It rained the first 3 hours of our hike and soaked the back half of the trail(The trail was not brushed well at the final stretch and got our shoes soaked. Definitely be prepared for worst case scenarios but getting out there even if you think are fully prepared, you will still learn a lot. Our trail said the estimate was 7 hours both ways when in reality it took us about 5-6 hours ONE way and we got to our campsite with only 2 hours of sunlight left. The first 4 km were about 1- 1.5 hours then the next 3 KM were 3 hours. The elevation changes influence time a LOT, so do your research on the trail, bring extra socks and have fun!

What would be nice, if you ad a cut, switch to your spot or homeplace and show how you pack your bag right without packing to much, show what’s useless on the long therm. That would make the video more colorful. Some nice tip you gave tho

learning to read a map & triangulate yourself is VERY important! outside of the all trails thing (I sorta think this should be required to hike lol) learn to use a compass to read a map & triangulate position. Thats allowed me to practically go get lost then find my way home, it would save many people hardships learning this simple easy skill!!

I used to go backpacking and hiking in Maine and New Hampshire in the 1970's. We had external frame packs, no cell phones, and no trekking poles. The shelters were rudimentary at best. But I still had a great time and survived. You can go hiking without all this stuff! Bring adequate clothing and food and a map and you will be okay.
