I was once told by a plumber that the manufacturers spent £millions on R&D to get compression fittings to seal properly, so under no circumstances do such a stupid thing as put anything on the joint. Stood me in good stead for donkeys years. A fitting that's been overtightened to the extent that it leaks means removing the fitting and a section of pipe and starting again.

It amazing what poor advice people take when they have no clue.

No jointing compound ever on copper pipe and brass compression fittings, makes the fitting serviceable in the future.

Jointing compound is not for me, have found a few that have leaked after a few years, (not installed by me) more so on hot water joints. Once the compound has gone hard and shrunken, It often won't tighten up to stop a leak, if leaking. I just squirt a drop of WD40 (any thin oil will do) into the joint just before tightening, works a treat, can fill the olive bite without over tightening, have never had one leak.

Another common mistake is when pipes are under tension when the joint is being tightened the olive can drift toward the end of the pipe i always used to undo the joint to double check when working with those tricky pipes.

You actually put the ptfe on the right way round. I know wrong place but in the right direction

Typical English methods, over complicated what is simple. Good quality fittings without any compound or extra work, compress the O ring without damaged it, and not make any sound when you tighten up and make the pipe water tight. This is reality in The Netherlands. In the UK maybe much more worst the situation, make demands at the factory, they are just lazy with quality. That's all. And this is my free advice and only 1.

Sorry don’t want to be moaning but when taping pipe/olive you need to go opposite direction from male thread taping - you are taping the stationary part and nut moves. Have to think of this every time I do it which only on something likely to need changed otherwise anaerobic thread seal every time. Cheers Rich

PTFE tape made from "plasticy nylon type stuff" ?????? It's made from PTFE, surprise 🙂

PTFE on the thread surely people can see you actually cut the tape away as you tighten itor maybe they cant see it

I always assemble and tighten dry, then remove the nut and put 2 wraps of ptfe tape over the olive. Never leaks doing that

Hi I'm a sparks and if you remember MICC cables which have a similar olive and gland system I had the same thing educating apprentices on not over tightening the olives because if they were over tightened and the cable was moved you lost a good earth as the outer sheath was the earth. Brilliant vid and good tips. I looked for the olive splitter that you sowed and could not fine that particular one. I would like to add that to my plumbing kit. In the past I have used a junior hacksaw very carefully to remove an olive not quite cutting through.

Why do you wrap the Teflon tape in the opposite direction to the nut tightening? Surely it’s more prone to bunching up into a lumpy mess rather than staying put?
What would I know, just an engineer for 40 years.

You did not put the PTFE tape the way you mentioned. It is now not in flow with the rotation on the nut in my opinion. Also missed an indication how tight it should be like make it hand tight to begin with and the a halve or whole turn. Specifying in momentum would go a little to far I assume.

I've always used jointing compound but just a thin trace, not like icing on a sponge cake. And put some on the pipe before sliding the olive on because you're then sealing another potential leak point.

Some really useful information.Ive used and do still use compression fittings, fuel and water..As you say,the quality of components, the ""outsourced" has gotten less if not downright poor. The pipe dope idea is good especially with lesser quality fittings.A quality pipe dope is good to know.I ask welldrillers ,they know. The ptfe tape on the threads of a compression fitting? Got a chuckle out of that.Might as well duct tape the whole unit .Anyhow,a good bit of useful shared know how,THANKS.

Never ever use fkn ptfe or jointing compound (poo) we call it on compression fittings.
If it squeaks like a dying mouse its to tight or you have warped the shape due to the vice being to tight on the fitting

For me the best tip I ever learnt was to not place the copper tube hard up against the bottom of the fitting as when the olive grips the tube the nut will pull the tube into the fitting but wont allow a full seal around the olive so prior to tightening the nut back the tube out of the fitting by a couple of millimetre then tighten it up ..job done 👍

PTFE also known as 'thread tape'. If you go to the makers website they describe how its used to reduce friction on the threads. It is specifically NOT to go on olives...but we all do it.

If you are lucky enough (or unlucky in some cases?) to live in Thailand - here there is NO copper pipes aaaaggghhh. Thais use blue plastic pipes for every application and glue. They DONT EVEN understand using pipe glue (sniffers paradise stuff) and they don't use emery cloth or fine grade sandpaper to prep the surfaces. So under pressure they pop. By which time the b'stard "bummer plumber" has gone with your cash on the piss. So what did I do (for 13 years) ? On all my systems which are drain-only (bogs and sinks, underground etc) I use blue plastic and for all pressurised systems I use amazing hot-welded green pipes which use an "easy to use" hand heater tool to form the weld and no Thais used here (Except my beautiful wife)!!! or no blown off joints mate (that's no reference to smokeable joints either or your blow up dolls) ...!

Sorry, but compression fittings do NOT use pipe dope, joint compound or ptfe tape. I didn't bother going past the first incorrect "lesson." Maybe physics is different in UK or they make/sell leaking compression fittings. As you demonstrated, using compound allows you to overtighten and destroy a compression fitting. Please correct or remove this video.

My wife placed an olive on my finger whilst we exchanged vows at our wedding. This was because i never wanted to wear a ring so we kept this as a private joke between ourselves to this day. Altho, i think t missus used up t value of what would hav bn a real ring and invested this on her expensive ring 😮😆
