Interesting….Strong similarities are seen between this psychologist’s take on stark divisions we’re seeing currently, and Thomas Sowell’s brilliant, un-biased, “A Conflict Of Visions” from nearly thirty years ago!
The terminology used is slt different, reformulated to fit the author’s obvious personal bias, but demonstrates not only Sowell’s psychological reasons for the two primary differing world views, but characterizes leftists as liberal (rather than as they are—-intolerant) as intelligent and cultured (rather than hive-like, borg-minded predictability) open to change with blind inclusiveness) rather than realizing the harm of forced diversity, open immigration, and importantly, the gross failure to manifest loyalty and purpose to this once-great country.

The use of terms such as "anti - - - - - - - - - -s" is textbook cult indoctrination psych 101, meant to try to silence critical thought and/or shame people into compliance.

An important message but not very well delivered because of (I think) covid restrictions. I would have liked to hear some thoughts as to why many folk get permanently fixed into either the Liberal or Conservative modes.......yes media and powerful elites are a factor but it's not the whole picture.

I was a far left guy up until my 30s. I loved Noam Chomsky and Michael Moore . Now at the 36 I’m pretty much a standard Fox News republican. I think I’ve always had a propensity for contrarianism. In my teens and twenties i rebelled against my ultra religious conservative family and then by my 30s I rebelled against living in a hyper progressive city and became conservative . A lot of it had to do with liberal policies tolerating homeless drug addicts to be able to defecate and shoot drugs out in the open, as well as what I saw as overreach from the left on a lot of cultural and societal issues. In my hometown of New York City I felt like I was in some kind of hive mind when it came to interacting with people in the dating and social market. At this point at 36 I just feel conservative ideals of personal responsibility and traditional values fit me a lot more than progressive values so I vote red almost exclusively . In my 20s I really thought I was a socialist lol it’s funny how things turn out

Least common personality type by an old and interesting system, The 5 Thinking Styles from the psychologist Robert Bramson, the Synthesist, such as a philosopher is needed to enter politics. We also need to include psychological analysis. Politicians should be empathetic and EIQ competent. Otherwise they aren't competent enough to do well at their job.
Pragmatist. Realist. Analyst. Synthesist. Idealist. Conservative vs liberal personality traits, allowing for intersectionality.
Fascinating stuff.

American exceptionalism at its finest! It's actually evolving, seeking now to be scientifically supported. "Think of the safety that's offered by our armed forces" still haven't heard a single explanation why invading Afghanistan or Irak or any other military operation of the last two decades somehow gave safety to American people. Because there isn't one. It actually had a toll of several thousands of US troops and many more innocent civilian lives. "The security of our banking system" you mean the one that has to be bailed out with public money from time to time? Sigh... If you like the convergence of science and politics, don't waste your time with American politics. There is a political and economical discourse that is based on scientific method. It's called communism. But you might be already too brainwashed with anti-communist propaganda to do the searching and reading for yourself.

Psychology is sooo fake. It's used nowdays only for political reasons. Making a statement and saying that Psychological studies proved it, is a good example of imposing ideologies even if they don't make sense. Psychology is not a science and will never be.

What you say is Truth! This U.S. Constitutional Republic needs both liberals and conservatives, to be healthy. Both sides can learn from one another. This is what America is made of.
I think everyone would be better off without satanic political elites and the social media lies that they push that cause division.
Let The Truth Be known. Christ is ending the political elites Right NOW.
You are watching it.
Soon they will be no More, FOREVER. Then All of The People shall Rejoice!
There will be NO satanic controlled political elites in Christ's Eternal Kingdom/Heaven.
So Be It!
Christ Bless!

What is interesting is that the most pure and good could be just as equally interested and involved in monitoring threats as the most evil.
And the term "threat" can be relative to the social class and identity group that you find yourself in.
Which is what makes identity politics and Marxism so dangerous and in my opinion, evil.
It's the ultimate 'divide and conquer' tactic.

Instead of fomenting cooperation of our greatest asset, human resource, it divides it, and creates chaos/disorder between the tribes and then collects the spoils of war in the aftermath.

This has been a "human trait" and historically happens to those who attain a high level of control and power in any society or hierarchy.

So it is also important to understand that this can happen to you and me if we attain and become tempted by this level of power.

The more we understand power at the level of the masses, the better we are at controlling it for the common good and welfare of all.

This is what I see as our last remaining, biggest problem. We know how to quickly end abject poverty and mass starvation that's plagued our species for ages. We've mastered our environment and resources.

What other resource is left to master for the common good other than the mastery of the most important resource aka power within the human resource.

This still doesn't get to the key issue we face right now. Conservatives monitor for threats but why is the extreme of that psychological profile entrance into a literal death cult? Why do we currently see so many end up in a position where they choose to expose themselves to a killer virus and possibly die in an effort to "own the libs", for example?

Progressive and Conservative views COULD balance each other out and help us make streamlined, valuable progress without losing the good things we already have. But in this current day for America, progressivism is shunned as being "socialist" or "communist", the farthest left the US will go is the Democrats (who are on the right by every other modern country's comparison) and the right is nothing but fearmongering and racial/religious insecurities. We need to throw out the people who have poisoned our politics and restart.

The second husband is a poster child of the ISTJ personality. Like my stepfather. My stepfather also didn't hesitate "adopting" my brother and I when we were kids after proposing to my handicapped mother whom he had met a month ago. He always considered me like his daughter, although his own had died to suicide years prior. He was extremely strict and certainly not fun in any way, but the only days off he ever took were for us. To organise our birthday parties and help my grandparents with the house and immense garden.

Such people (men and women) make the most reliable partners. Their political opinions tend to be at the right of the spectrum because they value certainty, order and tradition. They make the best law enforcers for this reason.

It's quite off topic, but I wanted to acknowledge this type of persons who are typically ill considered by society for being boring and close minded. They are one of those few people you can truly rely on

This is a great summary. I study Am. Gov't and political psychology at the graduate level. But I do wonder about the impact/importance of the lib/cons traits we find within the body politic on the lawmakers. I think the impact is minimal on lawmakers. Voters are arguing and are split on a very important and distinctive element of American society: The laws that are proposed and passed. That is the grist of the differences. Yes, cultural differences like who enjoys abstract art versus Norman Rockwell can shed light on that. But in the end, it's about legislation at the local, state, and federal levels. The problem I have found with political psychology is that even though a large literature is amassing on the psychology of individuals in the voting population, almost no studies have been completed on those in power. Those in power are not at all motivated by the things that mere voters are motivated by. This is a major oversight, then, within this academic sub-field. I maintain that no less than 50% of those in elected office--particularly in Congress--exhibit highly narcissistic and even sociopathic traits. This has become far worse with the advent of dark money in politics, because people in Congress--vulnerable to their own grandiose narcissism and/or sociopathy--have become immune to the needs of anyone other than their donor class. This includes Democrats as well as Republicans, though I'd say that we'd find far more sociopathy among Republican legislators than Democratic. Unfortunately, the field of political psychology almost refuses to study the personality and psychological features of our elected class in the US. That is a glaring omission..

The real danger is people like this on TED being overly academic, and not acknowledging their own inherent and demographic bias. Allowing themselves to “good people on both sides” their way through life without acknowledging extreme beliefs like ‘white superiority’.

How does one coexist with a perspective that holds the stance that you as a person are lesser, and deserving of harm; whether it be for your skin, religion, gender or sexuality? Simplifying the ‘division’ for the sake of sounding enlightened is disingenuous.

I don’t know how someone could listen to this and come away thinking that conservatism and progressivism are equally valuable. One side cares more about nuance making the world better, and the other bases decisions more on emotion and fear. Seems pretty clear to me which approach might lead to more accurate conclusions.

Go Deeper!! These traits all originate from our era of early humans walking the steppes. In small tight groups a few alert help see dangers, and some collaborative openminded ones build relationships with outsiders. So when you have many alert, hyped on anxiety in one party, you get paranoia. But the worst is not the political parties. Its's 20 psychopaths and sociopaths being seen as leaders and occupying boardrooms and the White House.
We have to wonder, are humans capable of living in such massive groups, as our balance of traits works best in small groups?
