I was wrong about that statement that most movies are shot in 1080p today HOWEVER
10 years ago the 2K statement was true. And most people can't see the difference between 4K and 2K.
Just consider the fact that I made the error. Didn't even notice that everything has shifted to 4K.

Have you found any difference in color saturation in 4K versus 1080p? I am curious because you achieve wonderful color effects on your indoor shots.

For shooting in-car scenes (while driving) and shooting nature, is the resolution more important or frame rate? Because we've shot some clips in 1080p, 30FPS and didn't check them. Now they don't look as vivid whilst the camera is moving. Is it possible that this is because of the rendering technique?

Thanks man.. I wanted to waste money on a 4k camera but since I already have a d3500 & cx405 and an iPhone 13 & an android k50i, I think I’ll not spend any money. I’m kind of a overspending guy. . . I Earn nothing btw😢

I run into too many snags when shooting in 4k and its not worth the trouble. .it looks great for my own purpose. the human eye can only see so much anyway. its overkill.

This video didn't age well... he now shoots and uploads all his videos in 4k. lol That's really where everything is heading. On a side note, it's not so much the resolution that makes Hollywood movies good... it's the MASSIVE bitrate. So yes, Hollywood shoots do take up an enormous amount of data, hence why it still looks really good in cinemas that still only project at 1080.

silly arguments. Industry went to 4K for a decades, and now you offer to throw everything out and continue to shoot 1080p. Sure, storage and upload time problem is severe, but it resolvable. Only now we have relatively inexpensive ways to shoot 4K oversampled from 8K (Nikon Z8, etc) with a full control over color.

Glad I found this advice. My eyesight isn’t the best And personally I can’t see a lot of difference between the 2. 1080 is fine for me, but then again I’m not making a living from film making😂

Long story short:
Pro: 4k
Amateur: 1080p

Edit: You can use proxies for video editing. With 4k, you can appeal to the 15% of viewers who bought a modern monitor and want to put it to use. Your videos age better. It's just more professional.

If there was a Sony camera where 4K is downsampled into 1080p 10bit, I would instantly buy it. The newer cameras from Sony looks like their 1080p is just 1080p with no downsampling.

1440p 60Hz should be standard for all TVs between 43" to 60".4K is overkill & 120Hz is . pure stupidity. And all FILMs should be also. 1440p/max60Hz. My opinion

Your video LOOKS like 1080p to me though! I can see a clear difference in yours compared to a good 4k video so in this alone my mind is made up for 4k. I don't know how anyone can claim 1080p looks like 4k, it's simply doesn't no matter how high the bitrate. If im wrong then please provide a link to an example.

There is judder in your report as soon as you are panning the camera. The reason is that you are recording at 24fps. Same judder results when recording at 25 or 50fps, to some extent also at 30fps. Only 60fps lead to a smooth result when panning the camera. Before you say that you can't see this please pan a landscape at a constant medium panning velocity at these various framerates and compare the results.

What can you recommend that has the best 60fps in 1080p?? Budget is below $100-300 if there is a camera with that specs 😭 used for cinematic video clips mostly of just daily life.

I have no argument with anything you had to say; however, I shoot a mix of 1080p and 4K. I shoot live theatre, concerts and dance shows. I shoot with 3-4 cameras. Usually the wide shot is done in 4K internally and on an Atomos recorder. This is because at some point in the show, I’m going to need the widest shot but often during the show I may need to crop in the shot. The other cameras shoot 1080p on the Atomos recorder and internally I shoot 4K. This way my safety (the internal recording) has the ability to punch in. Oddly enough, the Atomos 1080p recordings are much bigger than the internal 4K (10 bit) recordings, but they are much easier to edit. Even 4K ProRes recordings from an Atomos Recorder are easy to edit.

These are all great points. I do want to point out an 8th reason that is commonly overlooked: low-light performance. Most cameras work their best in as much light as possible. A camera sensor may be able to capture video in 4K, but the data rate means either the built-in sensor data processor or the card-writing processor may force the sensor to shoot in shorter exposures at a particular frame rate to allow the processor to play catch-up and be ready for the next frame. If you're out in broad daylight, you wouldn't notice this because the camera will have already had plenty of time to capture a frame, making this argument completely moot. But in low light, such as shooting a night scene or walking through a dim hallway, this will be easily noticeable. The camera may boost ISO by a factor of around 2 (if not manually set) and adjust exposure accordingly where needed, which will produce a noisier video, or in the case of maxed ISO, will shorten the time of exposure, making any subjects much darker than desired. While switching to RAW video shooting (if applicable) may help alleviate some of the effects in post-production, that alone will have the drawback of insanely large file sizes. When I learned about RAW video editing in HS, I was surprised to know that just one second of RAW video in 1080p24 could run as much as 75-80 megabytes of storage, and 1080p30 can be 100-115, and 1080p60 can be around 200-230. 2160p60 could be, if I am calculating right (4K wasn't around yet), around 800MB-1GB per second of video.

This is not a good strategy. Most of the social media content is delivered in rec709 8bit, but when recording your images you should use raw/log, as many k as possible, and 10/12bit. Then, you downscale to rec 709 8 bit 1080p.

My opinion is that the Human eye is limited to how good something looks on TV screens? I tried 4K recently but my editing software (Serif Movie X6) that I've used for 16 years without problem simply couldn't cope with 4K. Back to 1080p.

I still prefer 720p60. It also drives me nuts that most 1080p is still compressed to something like 4.2.0 chroma subsampling. As far as I can tell, that means we aren’t even getting full 1080p yet. So… scratch 4K unless you need 4K to get all the pixels of a 1080 image individually coded.

Great video. I don't think many million dollar productions like netflix are shooting 1080 though. From what I have heard, big companies like them have 4k minimum requirements.

Anyhow, it Makes me glad to know that alot of others are still commonly using 1080. I began shooting weddings just over a year ago. I use an a6500 and an a6300 which are both capable of 4k, but I think I would need about 25 batteries to last the entire day. Let alone the overheating issues throughout a 12-13 hour day of shooting.

Nice video.
