Newbee here too. Couldn't you have put the pieces of comb into an empty frame (held by rubber bands) and then back in the hive?

Remember that the bees are like people.
Some are more productive than others. Some are more creative than others.

From one allergist to another. If and when stung by a honeybee most likely you will not have an adverse reaction. In learning about my allergy I've learned that usually, don't have the usual breakout and swelling of the throat. But it'll make you feel very sick and have an upset stomach. Since learning this I do not get worried when it is honey bees that get near me. Wasps and hornets are something that I want to flee from because every time I've ever been stung there have been problems.
Best wishes on your endeavors and may God bless them.

First off blowing on the bees, that's carbon dioxide from your breath. That is no way the bees will not take offense to that. They'll move out of the way because they're annoyed. By it period you need one more piece of equipment. And that I call him frame rest. That's not what they they hang on the outside of the hive. And you put your frames that you're finished. Inspecting on that, it can hold up to 5 frames. But I never do more than 1 or 2 to make space for me to work on the rest of the frames inside. Period
The more adapt you can become a frame manipulation. The happier the bees will be because you don't want to spend a vast. Of time inspecting your hive. You do not have to find a queen on every look inside the hive just evidence that she is there a working brood in all stages of growth. The normal brood comb will have Honey in the Upper corners of the frame Some pollen just below the honey.
The rest of the frame if the Queen is laying properly. Should be solid brood from end end and to the bottom.
Sometimes the bees will chew out sections of the frames so they can make drone cells. Perfectly normal period period if you do not have a decent nectar flow, the bees will be slow to draw. The comb out, in fact, they will steal wax from some areas and put it in others. And that will make it virtually impossible to get the bees to draw out those damaged Comes.. You must give them sugar water during those.s of time when there's not enough Nectar coming in to support the development of the colony and sugar water is not the end of the world for the bees. They cannot be fed that on a continuous basis. Throughout the course of the year, cause it lacks in the nutrients to colony. Actually needs is a stopgap measure.

Mark Your queen with bright marker it will be much easier to spot her on the frame, saves You lot of time. Great video BTW.

Why did you think you had to destroy that? Just gumband it into a new frame and put it back insee Texas Beeworks, she shows exactly how this is done, nothing needs to be wasted, even small pieces

When inspecting your frames best advice is to keep the frame directly over the top of the hive, if the queen should fall off the frame you are inspecting she will fall back in the hive and not on the ground

Im a bee keeper from Manitoba. Just a bit of advice, when checking brood frames, keep the frame over the hive just in case something happens and the queen fals off or the frame drops. That way you still have the queen. Ive seen stranger things happen. Very nice videos. Its a wonderful experience to keep bees.

have you considered darker insulation? That shinny stuff is reflecting most of the sun...just a thought.

Really enjoyed watching your saga as I approach my first season of keeping bees.

Yes, I'm a nobody, BUT if the bees made such progress in 10-11 days, the only reason to not allow those honeycombs to stay is because it doesn't fit into YOUR plans. What a shame.

I missed your special by over a year. I would have bought some things from your store, but the shipping is insane, and after trying 3 times, i gave up. Im not paying twice as much for the shipping as the items I ordered cost in total. Sorry. Moving on from trying to buy supplies from you, but the other information is good.

I just came from searching "beekeeping" out of curiosity, and your video is super cool! I'm sorry there are so many weird comments unrelated to beekeeping, but your responses to them are very funny and unbothered. You do a really good job of describing what you're doing as you do it, which must be tough with so many things going on around you. I'm not brave enough to keep bees, but they're still really interesting and your video is a great introduction :)

I'm a little concerned that insulating the bees so much.. helping them maintain a higher temperature.. could increase their metabolism, causing them to eat more and live shorter lives, ending up with fewer bees in the spring.

Yes, definitely, the honey is fuel, they burn it metabolically to keep from freezing, and insulation reduces their "fuel cost" just as it does for us.. but I also think there could be a danger from too much insulation. I honestly don't know, but I'll be curious to see the spring follow-up video..

I use a bee chaser and I take a plastic tote with lid. I brush off the bees and put the frame in the tote and the lid back on each time I put a frame in. That keeps the bees from finding the frames and they do not follow you when you carry the tote back to where you need it
