Whether you're energized by this video or bummed and you hate me, please check out the rest of my videos! My normal style is in-depth, informative videos with a positive spin (no, really). I post regular pep talks, plus real talk about traditional publishing (because it's no walk in the park). Welcome :)

How do you seek out traditional publishing? So many hybrid publishers anymore that’s it’s put a bad taste in my mouth and I might as well publish KDP

If I can't get moving, I at least write an outline. If I have an idea for a scene, I write it, and build around it.

I discovered, when I started writing, that people will often ACT like they care when you tell them you are or want to be a writer. Like it’s some cool, beatnik thing. They may even agree to read your draft if you ask. But they won’t. They’ll give it back to you and say they were too busy. It’s like people overestimate their own interest. And if they do read your draft, they almost certainly won’t give you useful, substantial feedback. Because, as you say, people don’t care. Even when they say they do.
New writers always have unrealistic expectations, but it’s not always their own fault. Society is very selfish and dishonest, and hides it behind a mask of false politeness. Everyone wants to know a famous writer; no one wants to help a new writer become famous.
So yeah, if you want to be a writer, don’t kill your confidence by trying to involve people who don’t really care. You deserve better than that. Good beta readers are worth their weight in gold, and should you be lucky enough to find even one, cherish them. You’re going to be mostly working in a vacuum until you “make it”. To make it, you have to be enthusiastic about your own work to a degree that’s almost mentally ill. But you will make it. If you really, really want to.
“Writing a book is a horrible, exhausting struggle, like a long bout of some painful illness. One would never undertake such a thing if one were not driven on by some demon whom one can neither resist nor understand.” —George Orwell

"I quit writing after listening to her." and it's for the better, I recommended every struggling writer to take a moment and reflect on their initial decision, as why they even started writing? If your answer is- just for writer's fame or you wanted to be called a writer than it's better it will be better if you find something else important.

i really appreciate the reminder to stop worrying if it's all super original since everything's basically already been done. a decade ago, i wrote a near 1,000 page star wars inspired novel, started at age 13 and finished it by the time i was 14. and present day, i've been sitting here scratching my head now as a grown man, wondering why i can't just start writing like i used to for hours a day with no mental blocks. i think it's because i need to find structure for my own plots without fear of it being like something else, but remembering i dont need other mainstream plots to hold my hand either. everything is just a remix of something else anyway. thanks for being the kick in the ass i needed!

not sure all your advice was correct, but one thing is correct. Writers are a bunch of children that want too feel more unique than they are. Your core message is correct, stop bitching and realise that the odds are stacked against you. Now do something about it. I knew when starting my book, that I was shit, so kept writing and I didn't tell people and flaunt in front of them how I was writing, because that shits cringe and you shouldn't bet it all on writing your fantasy book

Right now I'm doing the hardest part (for me) of writing: Waiting to reread my manuscript to edit it. So many authors stress that when you finish a manuscript you should wait a while so you can look at it with a fresh unbiased perspective. I recently finished two stories and want to edit them so bad haha. I suppose I don't have to follow the advice, but I think the advice makes sense so I trust it. Also, for those of you who think your life is interesting enough to write about, use parts of your life as inspirations for different stories. Usually that will make better entertainment than a memoir anyway. And don't just write what happened in your life word for word and just changing the names of real life people. Take a snippet of your real life, exaggerate and fictionalize it and create new and interesting characters to throw into it, and use it as a base to setup a bigger story. Some examples of this are The Dark Half and Secret Window, Secret Garden, both by Stephen King. The setups for both stories are based off of something from King's life (The Dark Half being based on his pseudonym being outed as himself and Secret Window, Secret Garden being inspired by a crazed fan that broke into his house and accused him of stealing the story for "Misery") but as the stories go on they become their own entity disconnected from reality.

Thanks so much for the kick in the butt--this was the best advice I've ever heard on writing a first novel. I watched this video 3 months ago and finally stopped procrastinating. I just dove into writing it. I finished it a couple of days ago, and it ended up at 87k words. I pantsed it, used a notebook for time tracking, and kept a separate notebook for characters as they came up in the story.

Even better: it sucks, but I skimmed bits of it before setting it aside for the next 6 months, and it's definitely a keeper!

Thanks again!

I remember a few years ago just before I quit writing all together, I watched this and couldn’t bear finish it because.. idk maybe I couldn’t handle it. Now I’m back and I’m taking the advice without feeling like it’s an attack on the person watching this video but genuine support because you have to just go and write.

I had set up a schedule to plot my chapters on Wednesdays and write them on the Saturday and before I knew it I had a short story finished.

Just go and write. Seriously.

Thay actually are. If I wrote a book arguing that neurotypicals are mentally ill, who do you think will stop me? Giant mean gatekeepers who don't allow bleeding thinkers to cross any threshold. Reddit? That's adorable because reddit wouldn't even let my username exist. They banned me as I was making the account 😔 because I was arguing neurotypicals are mentally inept. My username was going to be "AutismInPerserverance" but Traditionally Autism girls are not allowed to be Great Minds. Especially if we are not yt. We are not allowed to tell yt ppl how or what to think. Or the true origin of mankind.......well good to know ill just go back to my first passion...drinking 🍸

throughout her spoken words,

as insights thrown to my souls door steps.
scared to pick it up,

as it is her afterthoughts after those miseries full of despair.
