I tied this very knot in the Coast Guard to make heaving lines for attaching to mooring lines.

Maybe illegal in backwards nanny states. No knot is illegal where I live. As a child I was always told it was a federal felony to tie a noose. Turns out it's not only perfectly legal to tie a noose it's perfectly legal to display it and threaten people with it as Donald Trumps ignorant evil supporters have proven time and time again.

Doesn't make any sense. You could simply attach any metal element to a rope and have the same effect. This is just more elegant.

See also the term " Life Preserver ". This term comes from the highly respected Book, Ashley's Book of Knots. Which is available as a free PDF download. The term comes from using it in self defence and the versions in the book serm to be in the 18 to 20 odd inch mark in length.

If certain people had their way, only criminals would be carrying weapons. That is the result of outlawing weapons. Intelligent legislation would result in tougher sentencing for violent criminals, not preventing food people from defending themselves.

These along with many other things like brass knuckles are mostly just legal because of their perception. There’s no practical reason a lot of things are illegal other than it was a sensational and scary thing at one point in time so it was banned.

Most laws should expire and need to be renewed every ~50 years or so. That way we’d have up to date laws that are based on the panic and presumptions of the past.

Morons who think the second amendment doesn't apply all read it as saying "the right to keep and bear (fire)arms..." .
Now, local laws may state one thing, but my key chain that attaches to my belt loop is not illegal as such, but is technically slungshot.

I always thought (as kid growing up) it was ridiculous that dad’s blackjack was illegal but the 4 inch dagger he had in the same work case wasn’t. His was a lead head with a 6 inch spring handle with the wrist loop. It was wrapped with braided leather. Small thing but definitely didn’t want to get hit with it! 😁
Interesting upload
