In this introductory video interview, artist-photographer Chris Yap elaborates on the motivations, methods, and processes behind his artwork “of cross-dressing & culture (an actor’s cut).”

This Grounded Conversations talk introduces one of our featured artists Chris Yap and his most recent work, “of cross-dressing & culture (an actor's cut)," which was commissioned for the Glossaries of the Straits Chinese Homemaking exhibition at the NUS Baba House. Together with independent curator Zulfadhli Hilmi, they will discuss the issues of gender, commercialisation of culture, and cross-disciplinary art-making, particularly in how contemporary installation art provides a window into highlighting the socio-political tensions of culture.

In conceptualising the Glossaries exhibition at the NUS Baba House, several contemporary artworks by artists Chris Yap, Michael Lee, and Victoria Cattoni were included to provide a contemporary avenue of access and various entry points into understanding the tensions and complexities of the Peranakan Chinese culture, that have emerged from discourses within the Straits Chinese permanent collection.
