I agree with almost everything you said except for this... The word "manga" in japan means "comics". It was only the west that made the word "manga" into a literal subset, or type of comic books. In japan, even marvel and dc comics would be considered manga because technically they are, considering the meaning of the word. So people calling themselves manga artists wouldn't offend the Japanese because they think of it as just a word, as opposed to the west, who thinks of it as a literal type of comics culture from japan. What I think though, is that they would more so identify with the style, which would resemble what you see in japan. And that didn't offend them because RWBY (which is western) and The Boondocks went on to be released in Japan and became fairly successful.

I live in Tokyo since 2010, I grew up here In shimokitazawa speak japanese, and I'm well integrated to the society. manga is just the name of the medium it has nothing with your origins there's a lot of non Japanese Mangaka here, and the Japanese refers to them as Mangaka, that's it it has nothing to do your origin.

While I agree with Koffee when he says that there is a standard when it comes to the quality of good manga. That’s pretty much where it ends for me. I do feel that if you want to be an international mangaka, you should study manga and gain an understanding of what makes it different from comics, in terms of panel layout, story telling, artistically, design wise etc. I personally don’t feel that you need to fully understand Japanese culture in order to make a good manga. In fact I think much like the Japanese who opened their contest to creators all over the world, that bringing your own culture into how you approach manga is what will help to make it fresh and original.

I will give it to Koffee Comics that he makes some good points in terms issues plaguing comics/manga industry from time to time. My main problem is u gotta be pretty patient while watching his video cuz his attitude n aggressive approach can rub u of the wrong way (which is understandable cuz dude can be a bit much. Just a bit lol). Even though he might make a good argument in some matters, I can't help but feel unsettled by how extreme he can be in getting his message across, especially when it comes to addressing other artists n their works.

This is why i dont watch koffee comics videos. He sounds very bitter. You can have fun making manga. Yes it hard work but it should be fun. I read alot of manga. They have their own style underneath the manga style. Rather it be stylised or realistic. Its still manga. And you don't need to work yourself to the point of almost killing yourself.

I'm just gonna talk about the dedication thing. Yes you SHOULDN'T work yourself to death like some mangaka (Horikoshi has health issues for example) BUT the lack of dedication is really evident in some western artists; I don't know everybody's life and maybe they have a 15 hr job with 4 kids etc that only leaves them with the weekends to draw, but the effort to improve isn't felt, you don't need to draw everyday but you can at least study other artists' videos if available, tune into live streams and just observe etc. When a new character is announced for a fighting game or RPG etc, you see HUNDREDS of fanart for them in the span of less than 8 hrs give or take, you don't see that from western artists, you don't even see that for western characters either (that's another issue so not gonna get into it). The difference in passion is astounding; THAT can be felt in the pages of manga, in their games etc. It IS something we should strive towards.

Whatever happened to artistic integrity? It's a shame so many so called "artist" are happy to put out awful stuff because they know their fans don't have many alternatives. Getting money for substandard works is no better than a grift. Wasn't this whole movement of self-published comics started because people wanted to get away from low effort garbage?
You don't have to kill yourself to achieve quality, maybe your output will be lower because you're pacing yourself, but to just throw up your hands and not try at all is just shows a lack of sincerity.

And no, it's not all just about having fun. Amateurs wait for inspiration. Making art is not always going to be "fun".

my only problem with this guy is that he thinks the standard should be all the big name mainstream manga titles out there. If you step out of the box (which as a manga artist you should do) there are 100s of different styles of manga out there from japan. A lot of them dont look like what's big time right now. Yes you should have a standard created by yourself, but it is not THE standard. The way manga looked from its inception to now is very different. Any vocation you should learn the history behind what you are persusing. Me personally I think modern day manga and anime isn't as exciting as 80s and 90s. So why would I set my standard to try and imitate mainstream works? Thats just stupid. And yes I'm a westerner and I call myself a manga artist, Manga just means comic in Japanese. I dont want to relate my work to western style comic art, because I dont really care much for it.(i still respect it tho) Working to death is just stupid btw. Balance. everything in life requires balance. The Japanese didnt just kamikaze their planes into warships(my grandpa fought them in world war 2) they also did banzai attacks right into marine lines by the 100s and 1000s. and rarely any prisoners were ever taken. They are just built different. Very far from that now though. Just their work ethic and dedication to their craft will always be ahead of everyone else. and thats ok.

Watch his videos about manga plus creators. I like Koffee and I think he’s right about certain things. What gets called ‘manga’ needs to change a little bit. There’s a comic he talks about in that video that is most definitely not a manga. You can’t have something that doesn’t even remotely resemble manga being considered manga on a manga plus creators site. It’s just a terrible look for anyone trying to publish in Japan one day 🇯🇵. I’m not necessarily sure what the standard should be, but there needs to be something or people should know it when they see it at the very least.
