Scene Queen - 18+ (Official Music Video)

A portion of the proceeds from this song will be given to RAINN in solidarity with survivors. I wrote “18+” to be controversial and I hope that’s what I’ve achieved. When I wrote the song I made it my mission to make something that sounds like an intense personal call out but also broad enough that it covers an entire epidemic within the scene. Having people arguing over which band I might be upset with, arguing over security measures taken place in the scene, or even arguing whether the lyrics are good or just borderline unsettling is the exact point of the song: to get people talking about what we’ve refused to talk about in the scene the last ten years. When I left the scene around 2015, because it no longer felt like a safe space for women, I swore that if I ever came back I would make it my mission to set fires until it was safe. I alluded to this heavily on Bimbocore Vol. 2 with my song “The Rapture (but it’s Pink)” featuring Mothica, but “18+” is me finally making the first step into that. Predatory behavior is something that has been happening in the scene for years and still happens now. If I waited for the perfect time and the easiest way to start the conversation, I would never get the chance. Since writing this song I’ve been terrified. Will I be harder to book? How many bands will hate me? Etc. but I realized this exact fear is the reason there’s not many songs like this. And it’s the reason it keeps happening. Who better to start the conversation than someone living in the scene rn? I hope you all enjoy.

This song is in such poor taste. If I were a grooming victim I’d be furious to know someone was taking my traumatic experience, making a joke out of it and making themselves money from it. This isn’t her story to tell. Either donate all the proceeds to the victims or don’t do stuff like this, it’s messed up.

It’s so hard to explain to people who were never part of the pop-punk/emo/scenecore scene just exactly how pervasive grooming and sexual assault of underage fans was throughout the early 2000’s to early 2010’s, and how much of it was completely out in the open. ATL and their tour bus full of bras from (definitely mostly underage) fans always gave me a bad vibe, but myself and many others were hesitant to speak on our discomfort because being ostracized from the scene was such a real threat.

Scene/emo/pop-punk/screamo/whatever you wanna call it- we all know these genres and this subculture attract young people who are feeling alone and hopeless, but all too often those kids end up being preyed upon instead of protected. Predators and groomers know they have an easy target in these kids, that’s what attracts them to this genre and this subculture. It’s about fucking time we start taking this scene back. Make predators afraid to show face at any show.
