Sachiko, are you guys OK? (earthquake).

So Japanese, like how she couldn't correct her English teacher in front of the class, because it's disrespectful to correct elders/superiors (even when they are totally wrong)

Surely if you were born in Japan, that makes you Japanese ? I thought people took their nationality from where they were born ??

She speaks native Japanese but her mannerisms are quite different from typical Japanese girls. She does not have the shyness that is commonly seen in young Japanese girls, and her openness is quite reminiscent of Western girls, though not the same as contemporary British girls either. Her unique cultural upbringing has given rise to her unique body language and personality. Way to go, Sachiko-san! 👍

It's interesting that she lacks a lot of the English slang words that other English-speaking people her age use. It makes sense that she grew up speaking English with only adults.

Thank you both for a really wonderful insight into a world that the vast majority of people could never even imagine what it is like to live in.
[I was born to British parents who were working in south east Asia, then we lived in both south and north Africa, Netherlands and Switzerland (10 homes by the age of 18 before I went to uni in the UK - very different from your experiences, but also with a lot of similarities, like the sense of being the "foreigner" when living full time in countries that you love, speak the language, go to school in etc]
What really struck me is that you are both such lovely people, empathetic, intelligent and with an innate kindness on how you interpret and retell the various experiences and events in your life, which have obviously not all been sugar and pearls.
Max .. you come across as a truly great guy, and I love what you are doing.
That said, wowowowow Jazmine, you seriously have to be one of the most wonderful human beings I have learned about in my many decades on this planet! Kudos girl in how you carry yourself and the amazing woman you already are. But mostly, heartfelt wishes and the best luck in achieving all your dreams 👍❤

This girl is almost my opposite. I was one of few Asians in a white community. I didn't learn English until I was 5 and English was my best subject. My parents were white, and unfortunately, I completely lost my native language. I understand the need to fit in with everyone else but looking totally different.

Very interesting stories!

Growing in a German household in France, without TV and such either, it's really striking how much I relate with Jazmine. Especially the part where you speak the language fluently but without a limited "house vocabulary" and being seen as speaking old-fashioned.

It's so weird how this would never even be made in most western countries. Even somewhere like Poland or Ukraine, where it's less diverse. Nobody could care less if a Chinese/Japanese/Indian etc. person grew up there. Just shows how closed off Japan is.

Your video format is too long and too disorganized and too informal. The answer to your questions are too diluted and rambling. You give your guest too much freedom to talk in circles and not get to the point. I lost attention. Maybe it's just this guest, but she should answer in 3 sentences not ramble for 5 min on each question without making clear statements.

Just a comment on teacher micro agression toward student, it happens in all countries, i had a jewish history teacher in Europe who would pick purely arbitrarily who he hated and would fail them no matter how well they did in exam. I don't know why he hated me but i was one of his targets and in history grading is very much difficult to prove, it's a teacher tyranny. So i ended up with horrible grades even though i was a good student. I wasn't the only one targeted and there was no way to prove it. His name was Weiss.

I hope one day "being Japanese" will mean a person who lives in Japan and acts as a native and not "being born to Japanese parents". From what I've read current Japan would benefit greatly from allowing more immigrants in. It's in power of government to create a temporary safe space for newcomers to accomodate to cultural norms without bothering natives too much.

So sad that she hasn't live in an English only speaking country. She will find that if she does go there, she will not be treated with disrespect as she is in Japan. She is use to it having lived there her whole life. But as a foreigner who has lived for years in a foreign country, people from that country can not see past your white skin even if you speak like them, drink like them, and eat like them. You are always treated differently. As they say in Asia, his hair may be black, but it is not black like mine. Having blond hair or brown hair and white skin, you NEVER fit in. There are pros and cons with this.
