These days in New Orleans, the first part of Carnival Season is “ball season” where parading organizations have their annual balls (masquerading optional), and social clubs have their debutante balls. I was asked to participate in the Young Men of Illinois debutant ball one year but my dad looked at the bill and said no, because as someone else said in this thread, these days a lot of balls are just displays of wealth and “showing off” the daughters and not necessarily a huge rush into the marriage scene anyway. As an alternative social “coming out”-style event, in the late 90s it started becoming more popular for girls to get together for joint Sweet 16 parties and attending those events was more impactful and comfortable to me than the elitism of debutante balls.

I love the idea of scheduled formal community events for young people to meet and have fun but those events should not cost that much money.

Meat market. Wealthy families using their daughters as a way to secure or increase wealth, status, power, property for a son to inherit or for a kingdom to afford the biggest military forces. The down side? Inbreading. Inherited diseases, veneareal diseases.

It's MAR-kwess. The French pronunciation is spelled Marquis. They're two different titles in two different countries.

Your video is interesting but you should have checked the pronunciation fo Devonshire (20.09)... it's not as in "to sire" but as in " Hampshire".

Just a tip for next time, Vauxhall pleasure gardens is pronounced like 'Vox-Haul'. I'm not even sure what the second one you said was, but I think your pronunciation was slightly off. Fabulous video though, can't wait to see more :)

My stepdad mom suggest
I register as a contestant.

I too had an opportunity
to join a debutante. I
really had no interest
in participating in that
society.

I wanted to pursue a
hair style model. As I
was told by a fashion
designer. My height
denined me a model
back in the early 1970's.
Followed by joining
the U.S. Army Services.

The reason there were more unmarried noble girls then men is also to do with the shorter time span women had for marriage. Unless you were independently wealthy and had lands of your own, it would be harder to arrange an advantageous first marriage after your daughter got to about 25. The prime age for marriage was considered to be 15-22.

Meanwhile, men could hold off marrying until their 30s and beyond. And provided they had wealth, status and land, there would be no shortage of marriage options.

Amazing but little known fact. It was the famously extravagant and opulent Marie Antoinette who first ditched the suffocating and inard damaging corsets and multi layers of clothing in favour of light, breezy muslin and silk and straw hats in her childish escapes to the "farm" at Versailles. You know, fresh milk, strawberries, petting zoo. ❤

The Dutchess of Devonshire was not "Georgie-ana", despite the spelling. Her name was pronounced "Jor-Jayna". Also "shire" is pronounced as "shur"(aka: Devon-shur). I understand that you're not British and I am not trying to be disrespectful but given the number of videos you make on British history, I think it is important to learn the correct pronunciations of names and places. 😊

this is a great video thank you so much. You said after World War I and the flu pandemic so many young people died that priorities shifted amongst the young. I wonder if we will see any shifting of priorities now, post Covid pandemic. Have we seen anything shift yet? I do think people have become less willing or able to find places in the real world to converse. Everyone is just alone on their phone, wherever they are.

We still have debutante balls in Australia. They were revived in the 1980s, and I participated in the first held in my town in living memory in 1983.
It was very formal, and nothing like a high school prom.
We also have a formal dance in the last year of high school, which is dissimilar to a debutante ball.

FWIW, in a number of medieval European countries, women could and did inherit property. Also, the vast majority of women worked...and at least partially supported themselves. (Some, particularly widows, wholly supported themselves, as they didn't have any other choice.)

I’m 43. I was a debutante when I was 18. Born and raised in the south. It was just a thing. Wore a white (wedding) dress, full length gloves… the whole nine. My date wore white tie and tails. I absolutely HATED that my parents made me do it lol. That kind of thing was never ever my vibe. I was invited to do a larger one the next year and I refused…
