My only gripe about this is Edward the confessor calling his mother "Mom", he would called her "Ma" or "Mutti".

King Harold: "Under no circumstances do you pursue or move off this hill. Whatever reason you can think of to move, except by my order, is invalid and wrong."
Small Group of Soldiers: "A portion of the enemy flees! Let's pursue and move off the hill to take all the glory for ourselves!" (Slaughtered)
King Harold: "Stay here or that will happen to you."
Larger Group of Soldiers: "Those knights are falling back for while taunting 'Bet you can' t catch us on foot!' Let's pursue and move off this hill to take all the glory for ourselves! WE won' t be isolated, surrounded, and destroyed!" (Slaughtered)
Another Group of Soldiers: "Those fleeing knights that turned and killed our men are fleeing again! Let's pursue and move off this hill to take all the glory for ourselves!" (Slaughtered)

Those men killed themselves and deserved to die. Zero sympathy as ttey betrayed their home and people. The French knights at Nicopolis (1396), demanded to be in the vanguard in unfamiliar territory. Other soldiers experienced fighting Ottomans wanted to hog all the glory for themselves! With them in the van, THEY could hog all the glory and share none with lesser men! They were butchered and deserved it.

For the past 300 years England has bashed France so hard it made their monarchy go extinct and we defeated, arrested and killed off their beloved little man Napoleon. Then for the past 100 years the Anglophonic sphere has completely wiped French culture off the map and English has become the international language. This hurts and pains the French so much they have to go 1000 years back in time to kidnap Norman nobles to feel better about themselves. 😅😂😅

Honestly i still dont think williams victory was one of better tactics but rather hadradas troops being overvigilent. I think id hadrada had marched against williams lines his victory would be certain. However william had fate on his side

You need to read up on your history! The Norse raiders were Danes and Swedes from southern Sweden. The DNA research has for a log time documented that the Norwegians stayed at home. Also, the Danish settlers has since the turn of the 10th century established the Dane Law areas of England, proving that England was under Danish influence, and not Norwegian. Sincerely, the Historian!

The Norman-French blend with Anglo-Saxon did not create Modern English; it created Middle English. The Modern English period would not begin for a few centuries to come.

People glorify William. His territorial ambitions didn’t stop at England as we know. He was merciless in his repression of English resistance and he seemed very much an imposed monarchy vs a welcomed or a reasonable in claim one. As such it and all descendants has no real legitimacy.

Very informative. I do find it hard to believe that troops broke the line. This seems a strange thing to do when you are having success behind the shield wall.
I do wonder about the reality of how this battle was won by the Normans and I also find the account of how Harold died questionable.
I think that Harold may have been killed by treachery in his own ranks.
But history is written by the victors and William the Conqueror is a better title than William the Sneaky git.

To be fair against that army, with a majority fyrd army after marching down the country after a recent battle, Harold could have done worse....should have waited for more troops and tried to burn their boats and cut their supplies but not bad mate

Fantastic video!

Slight correction though, William didn't begin the Plantagenet dynasty, he began the Norman dynasty. The Plantagenet dynasty was started by Henry II in 1154, William's great-grandson through his grand-daughter, Empress Matilda.

Beyond being a great commander, William just seemed to always have good luck. Not any huge luck mind you, but those unfavorable winds that delayed him were extremely helpful since Harold had to put down an invasion in the mean time, which bled and exhausted his army. Harold really never stood a chance.

The Anglo Saxon monarchy worked under a different philosophy from that of the Normans. While the Anglo Saxon monarchy was part of the social construct of England, the Norman monarchy was forced upon it. Land belonging to the Anglo Saxon nobility was confiscated as that nobility was dissolved and replaced by a new Norman one. Castles as mentioned were built, but not so much to protect from invaders, but to protect Normans from the newly conquered inhabitants simply because the Normans were not kindly overlords nor were they exactly welcome intruders. England received it's truly marked and stratified class system due primarily through this invasion. Even language was a barrier with french being the language of the court for centuries after Hastings.
