Yup. Used to weld on aluminum tanker trucks and because they had held diesel, gasoline, etc before- those would be the ugliest welds I made. Then some new aluminum that hadn’t been contaminated, welds looked like an instruction manual.
When I could do it, using the proper acid, heating the aluminum to allow pore expansion and letting it soak made the difference

Yeah I got a tig welder and didn’t realize I also have to get a bunch of new tools for it to work properly

Another welder going through the certification process cost me getting my aluminum TIG certs. Idiot kept taking my brushes and grinding wheels marked "ALUMINUM ONLY" and using them on his steel stuff. It was really great finding that out, especially when doing the root and cover passes.

Not mixing metals is so important in so many jobs, building cooling systems for PCs or other systems it's also applicable but is just as often ignored as it likely is in your field.

Love HPA, but it's criminal to discuss aluminum cleanliness and show somebody rubbing back and forth with scotchbrite.

Don't use scotchbrite! It sloughs off fibers and it's REAL easy to leave a few of those fibers behind. If you do, they'll burn up with the welding heat and their smoke will get sucked into the weld and turn it dirty AF.

Also it's best not to scrub/brush both directions - but I don't think that makes near as much difference as "they" say.

My dad always wanted a TIG welder, but he knew he couldn't justify the expenses because it was a rare occasion he would have to do any metal other than Steel. It's interesting to see what a TIG can do. Lovely welds.

I will remember all this when I take my
Parts to a welder
