This documentary, highly detailed albeit sad at times, absolutely sets the standard for all documentaries - regardless of subject matter. Intensively researched, it is the definitive F1 history. Thank you, thank you, thank you Motorsports Madness!

The driver trying to get the other driver out of his burning car, himself catching fire, running to the infield to put the fire on himself out then run back to the wreck and get the driver out... amazing, something that is once in a lifetime to watch. The man is a hero.

Our cars run faster and better and more efficient because of racing technology.....!!!

Both Hill and Rindt were incredibly lucky to survive those 1969 crashes in Spain, especially Rindt, whose survival was absolutely miraculous.
In the race immediately after it, Graham won his last GP - Monaco, for the fifth time, showing how quickly he was able to get over the shocking events in Spain. Rindt was out still injured. he didn't full recover for months.
Interestingly, when Graham had his horrendous crash in the Glen that year he was injured when being thrown out, because he'd taken his belts off a few minutes earlier to restart the car after a spin and couldn't put them on again without help. He was on his way back to the pits to get the car checked when the crash happened. For the rest of his life Graham strongly suspected that if he'd been wearing the belts when he crashed, the impact was such that he'd have been killed in the car.

Jackie Stewart tells a story about the 1966 crash.

Graham Hill naturally took all Jackie's petrol soaked overalls off, and, somehow, while he was lying there naked waiting for help, some nuns suddenly arrived from somewhere. (This bit is apparently genuine, I'll let you decide about the next one -

Jackie said that there were three nuns and, shocked by his naked body, they tried to put his overalls back on!
One of them, said Jackie, didn't know men had one at all (you can guess what). The second one knew men had one, but had never seen one. And the third one had seen plenty, but never one that big.
Pure Jackie!

This is probably a stupid question so to anyone reading please don't be rude. I'm genuinely curious and have tried looking up the answer, but what I've read varies.

I'm wondering why they don't close the cockpits in Formula 1 cars. I've read answers that said everything from performance to tradition - and even because the risk of driving without it makes the sport more exciting. Don't think any of those reasons sound more important than driver safety, though.

The only answers that sort of made sense were that it would affect their visibility and that they have a very limited amount of space, so opening a hatch might be difficult. It would seem like there should be some technology that could make it happen but since it hasn't I'm sure there's a reason.

I've wondered about this ever since I saw Senna's fatal crash, thinking he may have survived if he'd been in an enclosed cockpit (although I know safety has improved tremendously since then). I appreciate anyone willing to give me any more info.

It was not the impact that knocked out the French Liger Renault driver Erik Comas, it was because the right front wheel bounced off his helmet, otherwise thanks for this video.

I live on the Isle of Man and Mike 'the bike' Hailwood has somewhat of a god status here. Him, Surtees, The Dunlops, Agostini, McGuinness, Fogerty and Hislop are woven into the fabric of the island. Their exploits are well known, so thanks for creating a fantastic series so that the younger F1 fans can learn more about the absolute warriors/hero's this sport was built on.
