My husband was one of 8 children. Their mother had AS. 4 of the 8 children inherited it. His older brother died 4 years ago. The disease caused him so much pain he finally had heart failure probably caused by all the drugs he took. My husband worked as a house leader for Habitat Atlanta for years, then as a commercial AC mechanic in South Florida. He struggled and suffered until he finally had to go on disability. His last 2 years were living hell for him and for me. Rare as it may be, AS was given as his cause of death. He was only 56. Chiropractic kept him going for years longer than he would have been able to work. My younger son is a chiropractor-one of the best. He was unfortunately not living near us. But every time he came to visit, he gave my husband a great deal of relief from pain with adjustments and deep tissue massage. He had 3 surgeries - neck, upper back, lower back. AS requires aggressive treatment. Regular adjustments, heat and massage help. But honestly, grit and determination to keep moving, with the incentive of a child to care for is what will keep this young man going. I wish him the best. He deserves it.

I have the same problem! My neck is very stiff. Exercise and a good diet help me a lot now. 😢 It's a terrible disease . My dr doesn't want me to use a chiropractor anymore.

Hmmm I as well have AS and was told I should not really go and see a chiropractor because of higher risk of fractures.

Chiropracty is a pseudoscience cult.
All you need is to stretch daily, avoid bad posture.
Maybe start doing yoga or something.

Their "science" is basically "it feels good and thats proof enough"
Very similar to old asian massages, they used to be considered medicinal.

Please don’t perform these techniques on patients with severe ankylosing spondylitis. AS is recognized as an absolute contraindication to high velocity treatments. Do right by your patients and don’t exploit them for views. This is reckless and dangerous

Chiropractors aren't doctors. You need to see a OMM Doctor if you need to be manipulated.

Pretty sure you should NOT be manipulating a spine affected by AS. They are often fused throughout but extremely brittle due to the lack of normal articulation, and thus, ability to accommodate different positions. I feel deeply for anyone who has to suffer through AS, but this incredibly dangerous.

Bad thing is if he would of reacted at 18 yrs old he’d be so much better. The medicines they have then and now would have kept him from fusing and keeping him limber. Damn.
