Sorry to hear about that (not very surprising) interaction with a programmer. They can be a bit underdeveloped when it comes to social skills. In my game dev programming course at university, the best students were also the ones without a filter on their mouth and few people that enjoyed their prolonged company. Programming is something that benefits from having a different outlook on things, coming at it from unorthodox angles so to speak. But because it has a "perfect" form for each line of theoretical code (ie, the shortest, most performative) people can get hung up on the particulars of it all; which quite frankly is not helpful for anyone just trying to learn.

Yes the idea is good to know, but to be elitist about code to newcomers just strengthens the already prevalent culture of elitism that comes with the scene.

Our lecturers tried to get us to understand that just because we were programmers, it didn't mean that we had to only know programming as designers would often do scripting during game development and getting along as a team is far more important than perfect code when you have million dollar budgets and deadlines for your product.

whats beautiful is that parts of the considdered failed iPhone have been made by one manufacturer and that manufacturer in fact has a huge chip on their shoulder and does not discriminate their clients, so anybody can come in and make something with their parts down to selling said parts independently on the web... just like arduino or sony would...

Great video, but the drifting part could have been left out. Drifting on a control with no central position is never an issue, and drifting of analog sticks can very easily be solved in software, The low precision nature of turnable resistors should be tackled by calibrating. Arcade cabinets did this like forever. But I think Nintendo rather replaces a joycon than to ask us 1 minute of our time on boot when drift happens. Problem with the crank is that it is on the right side, it should have been on the left. Most people are better at using the right hand for fire buttons. This makes it very hard to use the crank on classic rotation-and-shoot games like Asteroids, Arkanoid and granddaddy of all rotational games Gyruss.

how exactly is this not a grayscale display? a true 1 bit display would only show black and white and nothing in between, which this thing clearly CAN display.

This play date display looks super dark in your video, it’s a cool little gadget but maybe not for me, there so many mini devices, like this, cool little emulators and others, but I would stick with my phone, cuz I am the kind of guy who uses it continually for maybe a good 2 weeks, and put it in a desk and forget about it unless I get reminded for something…..too little time and too many things to do

having one for 4 weeks now the missing backlight feels just like such a overblown issue, especially reading some of the comments... yes there are rare instances where it works pretty bad, but honestly you just adapt pretty quickly and most of the time it is simply a non issue. I have no other device that is as crisp and contrasty in bright environments, so this alone to me is worth having this kind of display. Gaming in the train with blinding sunlight works so much better than even modern OLED screens.

the SDK is awesome... no one cares it's not oled... I don't care that the first production run lacks a backlight... but how dare they ask me to pre-order it now with out a backlight update. There has to be some contractual reason with teenage engineering where they need to fulfill a certain amount of years or units, or else cut a check to update the design. I really want to support panic on this, but teenage engineering was a horrible choice for a partner. I'll stick to running playdate sim... and hope the future of playdate is a software emulator i can install on better hardware.
