Spiders are unique creatures. Not only can they spin intricate webs to catch their prey, they have an inbuilt packaging system which sees a fine strand of ‘wrapping tape’ exude on demand from their er… bottoms.
This fine strand is very sticky to all but the spider itself. In this clip we see a fly get caught in a spiders web, and in its struggles the vibrations and movement travels along the web to where the spider is laying in wait much like we wait for a pizza delivery.
The spider cautiously approaches the struggling fly and uses a sweeping action with its legs to swing its newly extruded filament webbing, up and around the entrapped fly.
When it rests to regain strength, the spider moves in, quickly wrapping some more bonds around the fly, until it’s completely bound up and unable to move.
The spider then moves in for the coup de grâce. Next meal sorted thankyou.
What’s fascinating is that the debilitating poison emitted by the spider’s glands, has no effect on the spider when he later eats the fly.
