My favorite arcade machine was nerfed for me.. they made the boss at the end that you beat for the jackpot way faster to the point where you can hardly hit it. I never expected Round 1 to reprogram Centipede because of the amount of 10000+ ticket prizes I was winning.

This is very similar to an episode of "Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends" where the whole house was trying to win the stuffed squeaky pig.

I played a live-action version of Deal or No Deal on a cruise in front of about 300 people and "won" a single penny.

Once, I went to an arcade with less than $5 and played the crossy road game a bunch of times for 75 cents a play. If you beat a specific score (around 170), you'd get a 1000 point bonus. I was averaging about 1200 points for 75 cents. I went home with a bunch of stuffed animals and other prizes.

i was visiting my fiancee's family for thanksgiving and we went to an arcade, and their brother was playing one of those games where you use a bunch of coins to push prizes toward the edge. he was just paying to have fun, but we looked up all the things he won afterward on amazon and he actually did spend less than he would've if he had bought them

6 years ago, I went to a sleep away camp to teach skills that would be useful in the adult world. On the last day, we went to an arcade. They said it was to teach us how to be responsible with money, so our final assignment would be to not waste it on an impulse decision. I didn’t learn that lesson, because I went straight to the claw machines with my $10, and in my first 5 tries ($2 per turn), got 2000 tickets. I then used my newly acquired riches to get a 17” (43cm) rocket ship lava lamp. Lava lamps of that size generally go for around $25-$30. I saved a MINIMUM of $10. It’s probably the first and last time I’ll ever earn a profit at an arcade.

TL;DR: 6 years ago, I went to a camp that teaches life skills, like how to handle money. We went to an arcade on the last day, and I got lucky at the claw machines with $10, earning myself a 2k tickets = $30 lava lamp.

PSA: Don’t be like me, and make impulsive decisions with money. Claw machines are basically gambling for kids, and there is no guaranteed return, even if you keep investing/trying again. If you see something you want in a claw machine, just buy it yourself. It’ll be cheaper 99% of the time, and cleaner 100% of the time.

as a kid, my friends and i used to go to the back of the arcade and to the bins, where we'd go bin diving to get the trashed tickets!! we'd reuse them like baby geniuses, until years later i tried again as a teen and those assholes started shredded the tickets before throwing them out 😢
